At moments....utterly confusing. But, heartwarming in the end. A unique and captivating love story.

First, let’s agree that any proper commentary on a classic such as this is best left to English Lit majors. I did briefly toy with the idea of a modern day send-up – A Tale of Two Streets – where the denizens of Main Street would rise up in populist dudgeon against the heartless, soulless sovereigns of Wall Street. I was never quite sure where to go with it, though. In my Reign of Terror equivalent, chants like, “Off with their retention bonuses,” lacked a certain meatiness. Besides, it seemed to me that Dickens was interested in more than just the consequences of class antipathy. He had a helluva story to tell, too. Despite what I thought were slow parts, where descriptions seemed just a tiny bit bloated, it turned out to be a real page-turner in the end. Brilliantly written, too, of course. Interesting history + great characters + majestic prose = 5 stars.

This is NOT good literature. It hooks like hell, but it´s not well written and the story is not so great. It has some interesting points, though.

1965 Caldecott Medal Winner Great illustrations in yellow, orange, pink, and gray. A child gets invited to eat with the King and Queen every day, and every day asks to bring a friend. They always agree. These friends turn out to be animals, some huge. In the end, the child invites them back and they go to the zoo together. A very fun an imaginative picture book in verse.

This book was given to me as a gift about 2 years ago and is probably not something I would have picked up off the shelf and thought "hey this looks interesting i'm going to get it" but I'm glad I finally picked it up. It actually took me a few attempts to actually finish it. At first I couldn't get past the dog being the narrator but in hindsight the story wouldn't have been as good had it been from the point of view of the human owner. I recommend this book to anyone that has a dog or likes dogs.

I really enjoyed this book and I thought it was very well written. Jane Austen is pretty witty. I really like this story. I always like a love story where the couple hates each other first! And how he does it all for her at the end. So cute. I just don't think the book is so much better than the movies...like a lot of people say. I guess I was kind of expecting way more info and storyline than the movies show, and although a few things were more detailed and they did spend more time doing things, there wasn't that much more to the book. I may have given this book higher marks if I hadn't already known the story. It's always hard to read something that's supposed to be exciting when you already know how it's going to end. Especially when the language makes it take so long to get there. :) But the language is beautiful and I love the elegance of that time period. All in all, I think every woman should read this book at some point in their life.

Read because of "Bones." Would have gained another star except for the stiff writing style.

I loved this book along with all of the others. Cassandra Clare did not let me down. As with the other two books I could not put this one down. I highly recommend this trilogy!

This book was really slow at first, but then it got a lot better. Celia Rees is one of my favorite authors and this book is so far the best.
