I gave it 3 stars because I've already watched the first season of True Blood and to some extent I liked how they fleshed :childish teehee: out other characters, though I have to say that the addition of Tara and her mother is no short of peevish. There are also some plot points that I wish the show had kept. However I swallowed the bait knowing there was a hook in it and here I go. I'm waiting for the next two books to come in.

I had heard that this book was a disappointment so my expectations were low, but I enjoyed it. It wasn't terribly sophisticated and was a bit X-Menish, but still. I thought it was pretty fun.

perhaps at the same time one of the most tedious and most fascinating books i've read. thucydides relates the history of the war between athens and sparta from 431-404BC. his meticulous attention to detail, tracing every development each year can drive you nuts, but his analysis is brilliant and his writing elegant. in particular, the speeches given by generals and politicians are rhetorical feasts. themes are the expansion of empire, the roles of justice and interest in politics, human nature, and the completely contradictory characters of the two cities, athens and sparta. pericles' funeral oration is transcendant.

I did not expect much when I began this book. In fact Afghanistan never really interested me. This book is a story of betrayal and redemption, the type of redemption that comes at a terrible price. Secondly, this book serves as an excellent glimpse into Muslim Afghan culture in a easy to follow narrative. I highly recommend this book for anyone who wants to learn about The east and its cultural background. I could tell you more but I do not want to spoil the book or make hypothesis about themes and characters relationships. So, stop wasting time and read it.

While this book offers a great story, I think it definitely could have been written in a more fun and up-beat tone. I also would have liked more personal antidotes about the dog and the dog's interactions with the family. Overall, it just read more like a documentary for me.
