Funny but disturbing.

I read this book in Junior High and not because it was assigned. To this day I still reference it in my mind in the height of political season, because it is so true of human nature and the effects of power on the human spirit!

I loved this book. I loved that the story came from the family of this fervent missionary and not from him. It's fascinating to see how his decisions affected them and determined for good or ill the paths that their lives took. The story resonated with me on a personal level because there are missionaries in my family. The repurcussions of their decisions to become missionaries affected the whole family both immediate and extended.

Since I generally am not a fan of Manhattan and don't understand those that are, I find chick-lit books set elsewhere to be refreshing and always a step above. I enjoyed the main character and her bizarre family and work situations...as usual with chick-lit books, I was frustrated at times with the complete insecurity of a woman who was clearly great. But I guess that's the nature of the beast. A fun read, over all!

I used to really not like this book, as I felt like it lost the touch of reality that made the other books so amazing. It wasn't until I read the sixth book and then re-read the second that I understood what was really happening. Even though this is still one of my least favorite books in the series, I now have a much greater appreciation for the events. I think Rowling did such an incredible job dropping clues throughout the series that can be pieced together with each new book that is released. The level of writing is definitely not at the level that you see starting with the next book.

It was the title that caught my attention. Then the interesting mix of contemporary (shopping malls) and fantasy (elves) that drew me in. That said, the premise is stretched a bit by the whole elven detainment center concept; in which many and various light and dark, Seelie and Unseelie, elves are all on some sort of upscale (urban and suburban and large enough to have various ecologies from woods to wetlands) reservation. All this is to keep those nasty elfin types from harming humans. The druid group who runs this detainment center has the least well developed characters--too many two dimensional fundamentalist religious flagellation-oriented monks. Still the protagonists are likable as a romantic pair, and (no little feat) the erotica is well-done. Despite the logistics and physics issues of the locale and the politics, I like this enough to read the next in the series and to look for the third book which should be out in two months.

I was disappointed this did not include plato's lost dialogue, because I'm fairly certain that Indiana Jones found it.
Really enjoyed this book. Loved the Venice component, the cooking and some mishchief. The relationships are well developed and enjoyable.
