This book is horrid, manipulative sludge. I hated the main protagonist and thought she was an absolutely terrible mother. (And as a far-from-flawless mother myself, it takes a lot for me to judge other mothers, fictional or otherwise.) I could not have cared less about the lawyer's storyline, and I found the father only slightly more tolerable than the mother. But unlikable characters are the least of this novel's problems. The whole book was just one excruciating coincidence after another that added up to nothing but high drama simply for drama's sake, yet I hung in b/c I wanted to see if maybe, by some miracle, at least one person in the book would actually be held somewhat accountable for their actions when it was all through. But the end was not only unnecessary and stupid, it was actually insulting to me as a reader. I've read almost every other book Jodi Picoult has written, and while she always dances back and forth between heightened but believable circumstances vs. "you have GOT to be kidding me," eye roll-inducing scenarios, I've actually enjoyed many of her previous novels. Even the ones I disliked because they went too far now look positively restrained in comparison to this mess. I have an enormous amount of respect for writers, and at the heart of her books, even the really bad ones, it's obvious that Ms. Picoult knows how to spin a yarn. I wish she'd put that talent to good use and write something different, something challenging, and drop the whole many narrators + controversial topic + courtroom battle + ridiculously dumb twist at end = signature Picoult formula. She's a bestselling author who could write whatever she wanted and it would sell...so Ms. Picoult, take ADVANTAGE of that position that many other immensely talented writers would kill for - don't abuse it. Bottom line...I guess I could have spared myself the time that typing this review has stolen from me, b/c ultimately I can sum up this book in one word: Yuck.

Loved this book. This was one of the first books my friends recommended I read when I got my nook and I have been reading tons ever since. The circumstances of Molly Marx’s death may be suspicious, but she hasn’t lost her joie de vivre. Newly arrived in the hereafter, aka the Duration, Molly, thirty-five years old, is delighted to discover that she can still keep tabs on those she left behind: Annabel, her beloved four-year-old daughter; Lucy, her combustible twin sister; Kitty, her piece-of-work mother-in-law; Brie, her beautiful and steadfast best friend; and, of course, her husband, Barry, a plastic surgeon with more than a professional interest in many of his female patients. As a bonus, Molly quickly realizes that the afterlife comes with a finely tuned bullshit detector. As Molly looks on, her loved ones try to discern whether her death was an accident, suicide, or murder. She was last seen alive leaving for a bike ride through New York City’s Riverside Park; her body was found lying on the bank of the Hudson River. Did a stranger lure Molly to danger? Did she plan to meet someone she thought she could trust? Could she have ended her own life for mysterious reasons, or did she simply lose control of her bike? As the police question her circle of intimates, Molly relives the years and days that led up to her sudden end: her marriage, troubled yet tender; her charmed work life as a magazine decorating editor; and the irresistible colleague to whom she was drawn. More than anything, Molly finds herself watching over Annabel–and realizing how motherhood helped to bring out her very best self. As the investigation into her death proceeds, Molly will relive her most precious moments–and take responsibility for the choices in her life. Exploring the bonds of fidelity, family, and friendship, and narrated by a memorable and endearing character, The Late, Lamented Molly Marx is a hilarious, deeply moving, and thought-provoking novel that is part mystery, part love story, and all heart.
