I thought this book was much better than the Da Vinci Code.

I am going to write a placeholder review for all of Robert Sampson's books because I plan to reread them soon. Hands down, the best writer/historian the pulps ever had! Why? Because he loves the pulps but he's not "in love" with them - he can show you why they were great, why they were awful, why they were brilliant, why they were cheap, how they were poetic and how they were trash, and do it all while informing you AND placing the whole shebang in it's cultural context AND entertaining you. An amazing writer, I believe I need one more book by him to have everything he ever wrote on the subject (that's been printed in book form, at least) - you may not ever need to actually read many pulp stories and now you don't have to - Robert Sampson has and can condense their weird wonder down into this strange, printed form of a magic elixir (a mixed metaphor!?! why, that would have made me 2/3rds of a cent if I was a bang-em out, hack pulp writer!) Seriously, these are some stunning books and well worth your time if you have any interest in the topic of the pulps and dime novels and genre history.

"Drugs may lead to nowhere, but at least it's the scenic route." That is the quote by Steven Wright that I kept thinking of during this entire book. I loved Klosterman's voice and how the description of the characters flowed. I loved the the dialog between the characters. But we went nowhere during the entire story. I grew up in a small town in Iowa and can relate to a lot of what Klosterman writes about. The characters all made sense to me even if I didn't know why I was reading about them. This would be a good book for anyone that grew up in a small town or who wants a view of what people are like in a small fictional town in North Dakota. All blended with a healthy mix of pop culture references.

It was okay. I would read other works by this author.

One of the world's first novels. Rambly but engaging.

Chabon, another personal favorite author of mine, forges a story about a series of events perpetuated by a writing professor, his talented and suicidal student, and his predatory publisher. Although Chabon is excellent at spinning narratives, I found this novel to be a bit cliche and maybe that is just my bias as the professor spends much of the novel stoned out of his mind. It paints a picture of university life of which I have very little familiarity. Events transpire during the university's WordFest. Grady Tripp finds himself dealing with his wife leaving him, his mistress getting pregnant, and the spontaneous actions and thefts of one of his gifted writing students. Grady, who is already battling the insecurities that come with his inability to complete his 2500+ novel, attempts to assist his student in escaping the consequences of a crime committed at the dean's home. Tripp takes James Leer, his writing student, along with him as he tries to determine what the next step is in his relationships and his career. The novel never ceases its forward motion and really does read like a screenplay, so it is not hard to see how it might have been adapted to the screen, although I have not seen it. Lives change. Enjoyable, but...something was missing. During

I'm still working on this one. It's a lot like Bitten by Kelley Armstrong (which I love) but the protagonist is much younger and acts it. The family dynamics and politics of the werecat community are quite interesting, and Faythe is an appealing protagonist, if impetuous at times. If I were still 23, as she is, I'd probably find that aspect of her personality more annoying than I do. Edited to add: this is a first novel, and it does read like one, albeit by a very gifted beginner. I think a bit more editing would be helpful; there are sections where a lot of exposition happens, but not much action, or at least not action that advances the plot. On the other hand, there are fewer of these moments than, say, in the Merry Gentry series by Laurell K. Hamilton, who's a seasoned pro, and despite them, the book remains a very quick read. I wish we didn't have to wait so long for the sequel!
For a while it was my favourite of the series, but that was when I was younger. Now that I'm older I like the books in which the characters are a little more mature better. Still fun.

** spoiler alert ** Kel is yet another lovable gal from Tamora Pierce's collection of Tortall books. Now, Kel is a page but she's got three more years until she becomes a squire. Now she must stand up against bullying boys, cruel older sisters and as always, the training master Lord Wyldon. Kel refuses to give up and faces swords, sorcery, good, evil and anything Wyldon throws at her. The lesson in this book is to never ever give up! Kel refuses to give up her dream of being a knight, the second since Alanna and the third in history, no matter what her training master throws at her. If she had given up, she would never made it past her first test. This is a young adult book more for girls than for boys.

This is a heart wrenching look inside what went on inside a holaust camp. It's written by a man that actually survived. I cried at different points in the book, and had nightmares on night's I read it. Very eye opening.
