Excellent. Like Killing Hope but sectioned by subject, ie torture, intl law, assasinations, overthrows, etc. Very easy to read and accesible for the layperson. Its kind of like Killing Hope light.

one of the only sci-fi type books/authors I've ever really gotten into. I read all the books in this series by the time I started high school after having to read this one for school. It's interesting stuff regarding time-travel, parallel times and places. . .life on other planets

This had all the makings to be a really great book but unfortunately the recipe wasn't quite right. Allen seemed like she was lining things up to be a big surprise at the end but it was all very predictable. I feel like everything just happened too quickly in this book, if things were actually kept a mystery and the truth was revealed at the end, it would of been better. Maybe if the story went back and forth from present to past, it would of made it more interesting as well. I read her other 3 books (Garden Spells is my favorite) so I was eager to read this one but was left disappointed. It makes me sad that it had so much going for it to be a good book. Overall it felt a little unorganized and a bit rushed and wish more time was spent with this story to make it work better. It did have some redeeming qualities that made me continue reading. I love how she adds a bit of magic to each book she makes and yet it still has a more realistic feel to it. I did like how we heard the thoughts of various characters and liked the romance in it. Like I said it did have all the pieces that I enjoyed, they just didn't come together quite right for me.

Take that Southern Baptists! Not only does Rowling turn out the best Christ allusion in recent history, she leaves a world of characters that I will remember as friends for a good long time.

Worum geht’s? Even though I don't coach youth football, I still was able to glean some interesting ideas that were pertinent to the H.S. level. Football is Football after all. Good info.

This is about 3 boys and their journey from Sudan, across Africa, and to the US. Very little focus on the US. Most of it is filled with horrific details about their experiences on their trek through Africa. It's a humbling book, but it also makes me want to do something about the situations in Africa.

Karen Armstrong, best known for her excellent Biography of God and some well-regarded books of Islam and buddhism, writes about her difficult life from convent through academia onto an individual road of her own choosing. "Faith is not about belief but about practice. Religion is not about accepting twenty impossible propositions before breakfast, but about doing things that change you. It is a moral aesthetic, an ehtical alchemy... The myths and laws of religion are not true because they confrom to some metaphysica, scientific, or historuical reality but because they are life enhancing. they tell you how human natur functions, but you will not discover their truths unless you aply these myths and doctrins to your own life and put them into practice..." p.270
