The Sexes is a small collection of Dorothy Parker's short stories about relationships, and is published as part of Penguin's mini modern classics series. The first story, the Sexes, is a masterclass in dialogue: taught, lucid, and oozing with an admixture of cultural, emotional and interpersonal tension. As a singular comment on the complex narrative that exists between the sexes, it is an aggressive shot across the bow against those that seek to deny the differences between the genders. The Lovely Leave offers a fly-on-the-wall perspective of the intricacies that lie behind the facade of a loving relationship. An education for those yet to experience loving relationships, and a mirror for everyone else, it's a pristine example of how to clothe reality in fiction. Like all collections, not all stories are crafted equally, and the Little Hours is the runt of the litter, a meandering story with little purpose other than to showcase a litany of quotations and the sharp poise of Parker’s prose. The final two stories, Glory in the Daytime and Lolita, bring the book to an ordered conclusion. Glory in the Daytime is a sharp vignette contrasting the human costs of fame against the droll existence of normalcy, and Lolita is a strange but elegant story of the smallness of attitude fostered by small town life. The Sexes is an perfectly tempered collection of short stories that not only underlines the genius of Dorothy Parker, but also serves as a intricate lesson about the complexities of human emotion and sexual politics. And apart from being a taut read, it serves as a gentle reminder that–for those willing to look–the richness of life is there to marvel at just beyond the graceful vision of our eyes.

Another delightful little story! It turns out I am a very young child at heart. ;-) I love the drawings of Miss Moppet!

I never read this until a few weeks ago and when I did, I cried the whole way through. The portrayal of friendship and self-sacrifice on behalf of a loved one is beautiful and impactful. I will definitely read this aloud to my children some day.

I was given this book to read several years ago when my father-in-law was dying. I mean, right at the very moments of his dying. I sat in the living room of the house in which he died, and read several parts of the book, and became too overcome with emotion to finish it. And, of course I was not in a place or emotional space to take in the information. I later purchased a copy of this book and read it. Incredible. The last moments of any human life are indeed someone's Final Gifts's to us, and by being present, it is our way to return these gifts. Not everyone can or will want to do this, but even if you want to make the last of the time you spend with someone you know is very ill, this book is good preparation. I believe it helped me very much, and will continue to as I lose cherished loved ones, or if I find I need a way to prepare them if my time should come.
I'm going to start with the one thing that I enjoyed about this story because there honestly are only a few. How awesome was Coyote?! He may be my favorite character to enter Mercy's world. He was witty, and mischevious, and mysterious and he made rather dull moments more interesting. This book gave me a great new appreciation for the secondary characters in this series. The story was definitely lacking without them. I didn't enjoy reading this until around page 200. Mercy and Adam alone on their honeymoon would have been much better if Briggs would write an actual sex scene. It's not like there were many romantic moments and the passion seemed to be missing maybe because when they make love we miss the nice and nasty details. I honestly don't remember the last time I read a book that had sex scenes that never really seemed to happen. Yes, I understand now that it's Briggs' writing style, but I thought a honeymoon may be an exception. Although I had a hard time enjoying this book I still love Mercy's character and how unique she is. Adam isn't one of my favorite male leads, but I do like him too. Mercy and Adam together . . . not really all that exciting. I enjoy the world Mercy lives in but being outside of it and learning about Mercy's heritage was incredibly boring. Don't expect a lot of action or you will be as disappointed as I was. Now I'll say, despite my complaints, I will continue to read this series.

Abigail Jane Stewart, called Abby by her family and friends, is eleven years old and living in Valley Forge, Pennsylvania when the American army arrives there in December 1777. Abby is mostly worried about her mother and her new baby brother, because five of her brothers died in infancy and she is afraid for this new baby. She thinks war is an adventure and doesn’t understand how serious it is. However, when Abby, her mother, and her two sisters get a job doing laundry for General Washington, Abby and her sisters learn firsthand about the horrors of war. Determined to do their part to help, they sew for the soldiers, and visit the sick and injured soldiers in the encampment. In the process, Abby matures and understands the sacrifices of the soldiers, and that freedom is worth fighting for. I first read The Winter of Red Snow in 1996, when it was first published as one of the first books in the Dear America series. Each book in the series is the fictional diary of a preteen or young teenage girl living during an important time in American history. Out of the many books in the series, this one remains one of my favorites. The Dear America series truly brings history to life and helped me develop a love for historical fiction, and I am glad to see the series is being brought back into print for a new generation of readers. Highly recommended.

Rusty thinks to be a pretty normal guy. Yes, he have some weird feelings and he can't remember something happen when he was in high school, but, apart this, he has a good work as costumer. Ok, he has a strange strenght for a pretty slim and cute guy like him, but he has only to learn to control him... maybe his social life is pretty lonely cause he doesn't trust himself to lose control with other people and sex is a good way to lose all the inhibition. So when he meets Shiro he is confused: why he feels attraction for this guy? He has never before felt sexual attraction for a guy. Sure Shiro his very handsome, blonde and broad shoulder and pretty pushing, but he has no intention to have sexual intercourse with a man. But then he discovers that Shiro is not a normal man, he is a fox spirit, a really fox-human kind of being, with flurry ears and beautiful long tail... a bautiful white fox where he himself his a cute red fox. Cause Shiro many years ago has made him into his consort and now that he has found him again, he has no intention to let him go away. A really interesting story who mixed paranormal romance with oriental myth. Rusty is not the usual uke, he is strong willed and heat tempered, like a true red-head. Shiro is somewhat more cold, white and distant, but very passionate. He is, I think, more young in age than Rusty, but he has an aura of power around him that easily identify him has a leader. The story is not too short, but sometimes I have the feeling that the author has cut it to stay under a certain lenght... I'd like to read a little more about this two, and maybe have some hints more about the life of Shiro between Rusty's turn and the present time. But regardless, it's a very enjoyable story and sex is playful without being too kinky. http://www.amazon.com/dp/155410680X/?...
