This was a wonderful collection of pieces, albeit badly named. Most were nor funny or were very dark humor. I loved the range of authors- Pulitzer prize winning all the way to a failed sitcom pilot. I bought this for my brothers birthday before I read it and I'm glad I did. I'm also grateful this is the book I took on vacation with me- perfect to pick up and our down!

What a pleasant surprise this was. First off, Benderson's eviscerations of the Northwest's dull middle-class culture are vicious and spot-on. Right on! And yet, he doesn't come off as just some terrible New York snob. Rather, he just reveals that maybe, today, the emperor might not be wearing any clothes. And-- and I say this as a Northwesterner-- his enumerations of what is actually interesting about the region are just as accurate. I'm so glad this was written by an actual outsider-- a pleasant contrast to the obnoxious, self-fellating local writers. What I liked so much about it was also that it was very much a narrative with a narrator who had a personality-- in an age of impersonal, realist American fiction, this was a blast of fresh air.

The characters (especially Lisbeth) are as captivating as ever, and the mystery of Lisbeth's background as well as how the murderers are going to be caught make it a page-turner. However, the ending was a total cliff-hanger. Unlike the Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, which had a definitive ending as well as enough loose ends to make you want to read the next installment, this book has no closure and requires you to keep reading. I hate that. As a protest, I will likely not read the next book in the series.

Each chapter opens with a Seduction Tip that often made me chuckle at its absurdity. What scares me most is that these tips were probably real and not made up by Richard Uhlig. In that case, what sort of man would even follow these tips in hopes of becoming a "Seductive Man"? I guess, the answer would be young boys who don't know any better like Les. As I said before, Boy Minus Girl was a little too much boy perspective for me. I found it somewhat amusing, but nothing too spectacular. Complete review on my blog

Yes, it's an iconic work of anarchy and environmentalism, but that doesn't mean it isn't worth the read. This book is hilarious. Like most other American nature writers, Abbey was a bit of a self-important pig (I can't stand Farley Mowat, though maybe he's Canadian); unlike most other American nature writers, he has a sense of humor about it. The characters are grizzled and absurd, their actions are grandiose and delusional, and I felt a strong sense of solidarity and sympathy the whole way that I probably shouldn't reveal in a public forum. Their last desperate measures to halt uncontrolled development and destruction of the West resonate in a way that a factual description of the follies of massive energy projects would not. There is a wider array of characters than normally stereotyped as environmentalists -- in fact, there are no tree-hugging hippies in this book -- and that's what makes it so rich. There's a polygamous Mormon tour-guide whose home lies under a dam-made reservoir, a manic inarticulate and a-social young veteran, and a rich suburban doctor who's banging a younger, depressed transplanted New Yorker. A common critique of Abbey is that he's sexist, and this may be, but I actually like Bonnie's character, objectified though she was as the sole female character and self-aware slut. No, I am not going to go drive a Caterpillar off a cliff now, but this book does make you wonder . . .
