In this book, Paul McPartlan demonstrates the intrinsic connection between the Eucharist and the Church, showing that this "Sacrament of Salvation" is the "glue" that binds Christians together and unites them as a Church. Very helpful for anyone interested in exploring the notion that "the Eucharist makes the Church" as Pope John Paul II reiterated in his encyclical on the Eucharist. The opening chapters were also very influential to my understanding of the link between the Scriptures and the liturgy, with McPartlan persuasively arguing that most, if not all, of the New Testament texts were written specifically to be proclaimed at the Eucharist and contain much Eucharistic theology. Highly recommended!

Perhaps it's because the field for dystopian fiction is flooded with really wonderful books at the moment, but considering its competition this was pretty middle-of-the-road for me. The premise behind the Society in Matched is basically insane micromanagement; they tell you what you eat, when you die, what your job is and who you marry. The last condition is the one that sets the story in motion when Cassia is finally old enough to attend her own Match Ceremony and meet her future husband. What the plot eventually shapes up to rest upon is a love triangle, which really lacked substance. While one of the boys was Cassia's best friend, her attraction to the other contender is based on a few flimsy interactions, sympathy for his life story and pretty eyes. If it was just a crush, then that'd be one thing...but the idea that someone would actually risk their world for someone they honestly barely know is a pretty immature one (and one I would discourage girls from pursuing). My other peeve with this is that the two boys end up representing different life paths and choices for Cassia in which the option of "none of the above, just go and figure out who you are as an individual" is never discussed. If you can ignore the love triangle's flaws, then the story had some interesting twists and turns to it and posed the requisite philosophical questions that such a government tends to raise: what is the tradeoff between choice and happiness? Would we rather be free or content? How important is our right to choose and make mistakes for ourselves? What should we be willing to risk for freedom?

I read this book and was immediately hooked. I couldn't but it down. I think it was very well writting and has a plot that just keeps the pages turning.

This was a great book. I can see why it was a bestseller...it had positive strong female characters, a deep and well-rounded look at American life in the early 1960s, it was an easy and short read and it inspired me. I felt a renewed sense of the concept... never underestimate the change a few people can create by telling their own truths. A great book.

yes this book is genius. however it also kinda throws this fact in your face screaming "i'm a new type of story, analyze me, think about me, i'm brilliant!" this would of course be far more annoying if it weren't true. a great introduction to auster

Austen's book is an absolutely delightful character study full of wit and insight. Her characters have depth and develop as the plot progresses. I found myself reveling in the language and the witty (and sometimes biting) repartee. It is a thoroughly enjoyable novel.
This one involves *spiritualists* and a kidnapped child on a Hudson River estate. Think Lindburgh.

Read this one first! It is his latest and is the one I saw him discussing on KPBS full Focus.

This book is a must-have for truly devoted fans of "The Bronze Horseman" trilogy. As always, Paullina Simons' writing was fantastic and the wealth of traditional and authentic Russian dishes (plus some from Tatiana & Alexander's years in America) was wonderful. I loved it.
