Lord and Lady Spy by Shana Galen Historical Romance- Sept. 1st, 2011 5 stars Lord Adrian Smythe is a gentleman and a spy. He works in the clandestine Barbican group for the Foreign Office. But after the capture of Napoleon, he suddenly finds himself out of work! Adrian lives for the excitement and the knowledge that he is helping his country especially since his father was branded a traitor. He dreads returning to boring England and his estranged wife Sophia Lady Sophia Smythe is known simply as the Saint. Her latest mission to capture a close confidante of Bonaparte goes wrong when another agent takes him first! Frustrated she looks forward to her next mission to redeem herself only to be told she is obsolete! Sophia doesn’t want to return to England and memories of a stagnant marriage. Out of her mind with boredom, she is thrilled when her old contact Blue gives her a message from the Foreign office -they want to see her. But she is immediately dismayed to discover that she and another agent are to compete against each. And her competition is none other than her handsome and estranged husband Adrian! The first to solve a mysterious murder will receive the last opening in the Barbican group. This was a fun adventure! The two main characters were one of the most entertaining and charming couple I’ve read in a long time. I liked how they tried to out do each other and quarreled but I could still feel how much each cared for the other- even if they tried to deny it to themselves. Once they got over their competitive streaks, they complemented each other marvelously! It was amusing to read how they tried to outwit each other but found to their dismay that they were evenly matched. I also liked that before they knew each other’s real identities, they had admired the other agent and wished they had the chance to meet and work with the other person. Both the characters are extremely likeable. Even when they try to out do each other, they are fair and try to help the other person. It was fun to read how they had their own 'disguise,' hiding their real personality. Even with their dull or boring disguises, they both were attracted to each other before they knew the truth of their real identities. (This made me feel that they were meant to be with each other.) They were the perfect team and couple. I really felt this story could have been made into a historical romantic comedy or one of those mysterious series with a dashing and clever couple who work together to solve a mystery. It reminded me of the popular black and white Thin Man movies. While the reality of them not knowing each after living so close to each other is unlikely, this novel makes you want to believe it. I also was fascinated by the mysterious agent simply known as Blue who seems to know everyone and be everywhere. Lively, action-packed fun with two clever and highly engaging main characters. I would love it if the author continued their adventures! Reviewed by Steph from the Bookaholics Romance Book Club

We had a hunch that the first solo effort by son Felix to write a “Dick Francis” novel would turn out OK, given that undoubtedly he bore the lion’s share of the work on the last several official collaborations with his dad. And like the whole world, we could hardly wait to see if “Gamble” would hold up to the unusual scrutiny so often applied to the next book in a series not written by the original author. To us, it’s a very commendable job! A retired jockey, Nick Foxton, now a financial advisor at an investment firm, has taken a colleague to the horse races – and as he stands aside him, his friend is murdered in broad daylight, with none of the thousands nearby seeing the shooter. Nick takes it upon himself to look into the how and why, and soon discovers a potentially serious scam in which one of his firm’s partners might well be involved that was probably a motive in the killing of his co-worker. While looking into his friend’s effects (after he learns he’s the executor of the estate), he eventually starts to unravel some sort of internet gambling scheme. Soon enough, it’s Nick who becomes the target of violence when his snooping starts getting too close to the bone. His mother, fiancé, and several of his friends are nearly involved before the bad guys come to light – but who will get who first? To be direct, we enjoyed this story and would be hard-pressed to even quibble over aspects that might or might not fit into the old Francis mode. In Nick Foxton, we have the type of protagonist nearly all these books feature – basically a nice smart guy we’d all like to emulate, in a suspenseful enough tale that made us want to race to the end. Plenty good enough for us – bring on some more!

Rosemary Goode is a fat teenager. This is how she sees herself: self-defined by the word "fat." She is tired of being harassed by mean girls at school and by her own mother and aunt. She is also interested in a football player, himself a strapping hulk of a guy, but doesn't believe that anyone can be interested in her in the body she's got. Ill-advised as it may be, Rosemary begins drinking Pounds-Away (a fictionalized SimFast) instead of eating regular meals and begins exercising with the help of a skinny, gorgeous new friend, and soon starts to feel better about herself. Before she begins her diet plan, however, the cute guy actually notices her and eventually asks her out, which I appreciated-- it makes the book less "cause-and-effect." One of the novel's main plot points is when Rosemary's hyper-ambitious mother is diagnosed with cancer, which affects her mother's approach to life. Although I started out loving the book and the author's wry writing style, it eventually grew tiresome and, in my opinion, devolved into more unbelievable drivel that young adult authors seem to feel okay about putting into books aimed at teenagers. I didn't understand or believe the best friendship that developed between Rosemary and one of the prettiest, most popular girls at the school, and I also didn't understand the out-of-the-blue attraction that the cute guy showed for Rosemary. Maybe I'm cynical, or maybe I've been working in a high school for too long, but it seemed way too easy. At least they all could have gotten to know each other in youth group, or even been forced into being lab partners (why is this always how YA authors get two totally different characters together?). Anyway, I think the author got lazy and cheapened what had a promising beginning.
