This book wasn't nearly exciting enough. I don't even want to read the rest of the series; the book was entirely forgettable.

This is absolutely an outstanding series. Just a couple small complaints to justify the 4-star rating instead of a 5-star; I think Katniss was too (1) aloof and (2) self-loathing in this book. She wasn't so in the first book. In fact, Katniss' strength and intellegence is one of the great aspects of book 1. Isn't this what we want to convey to young women? I'm not sure the reason for her digression toward Bella-like behavior. (Plot tool)? Hopefully she gets back to her old self in the next book of the series.

Love Puck. What the violin was, was obvious. Good, emotionally charged short. Hope that Ash and Puck can resolve their differences and Puck's heart gets tended to.

This book was written before Bryson found his comfort zone with his narrative voice, and it shows. The elements are here of the Bryson we'd all come to know and love later - the complaints, the penny-pinching, the humor, the mishaps - but it doesn't come together perfectly, and the result is a book that - okay, it's funny. But it left me feeling like two minutes in the author's actual company would be two minutes two many. Still, it's a great outsider's view of the US - all the more interesting because he's an American, just one who has been living in the UK for a decade and a half. And who doesn't love a road trip? Well worth a read; well worth owning. Just don't go into this expecting the polished, less bitey Bryson of later books.

I just started learning about the history of the history of slavery in the South. This is the first of many books I will be reading on the subject. I enjoyed reading the book...but had difficulty with many of the words and references the author used. The author was writing with a 1920s mind...and for his time he was considered the top of his field and "Progressive" but it was hard for my 21st century mind to wrap my brain around some of the things I read. I think it was a great book to introduce the topic...and it did give me a lot to think about. Issues of environmental determinism, the OLD SOUTH and the "good ole days," paternalism, and why slavery...all issues that are of interest and need to be studied.

This books tell the story of Cancer, the C-word. The emperor of all maladies. The author and you make a journey from the ancient egyptian time to 2009 and he tells you about all the discoveries, the wrong conclusions, and the starting of the public war of cancer. He also tell you about his patients, and their battle with the disease. It's a big read, but it's very much worth your effort.

Greg Mortenson comes across in this book and in person as a reluctant hero. In my eyes he embodies what it means to find your life's purpose. When you finish reading this book you want to open up your checkbook to give and reevaluate your current path in this world. Without setting out to do so, Greg Mortenson gives us an opportunity to see beyond 9/11 to the other side of the war. Promoting peace through education of girls? What a wonderful concept to devote one's life to.
