Good book. Fast read. Fun and nothing more.

I liked this book. The setting in San Francisco was well done, and I liked the chaos/harmony world building. Her magic was fascinating and the characters interesting. There a little choppiness in pacing. I think future books may be even better because there were hints that there are depths to the magic that were only touched on in this book. Some people seem up in arms about her eating disorder or political aspects. I didn't really mind either plot points. Maybe I downplayed the eating disorder to myself because it seemed to be a means for showing how Nola's life opens up as she starts embracing things that she has compartmentalized, while you can't write a book about an Israeli Interpol agent and not have at least a tiny bit of history/politics.

A quick read and very introspective. I probably would have given this more stars had I been in a more contemplative place in my life. There were some pretty heavy concepts that I could tell would have been insightfully analogous to life, but I'm just not in a deep mood. This is one I'll have to go back and read when I'm struggling with what's important in life.
Excellent book. Probaby one of all time favorites.

The title intrigued me. What would she have to say? A lot. It's the story of her marriage to a Confederate soldier who never got over losing his best friend. But it's also the story of her mother; her housekeeper, who used to be the narrator's husband's slave; her husband; and others. In fact, I thought about including it on my short story bookshelf. Some of the anecdotes were very good, others seemed to drag on forever. I didn't think the slave's story was ever going to end. It's hit or miss, but you could really probably just dip into a section at a time rather than trying to read the whole thing as a novel.
In this book, Cassia accidentally plays the lottery along with her co-workers, and together they win about 20 million dollars (her share comes out to several million after taxes). Cassia has been raised to scrimp and save every penny, so she tries to give the money away, and in the process, falls in love with her neighbor, a world-renowned journalist.

The first time I read this I was really bugged by Bella's obsessiveness with Edward, but the second time it didn't really bother me, probably because I was expecting it and have read the whole series now. I just picked this up and read it in a 24 hour period, then instantly picked up the next... So good!

** spoiler alert ** I had high hopes for this book and I thought about even buying it, thank goodness I didn't. I felt like it got bogged down in the middle and could have used some editing. I felt myself skimming, skimming, skimming and I love thick books rich with description. And of course, a cliffhanger at the end of a novel means a sequel is in the works.

I didn't expect to like this book because I'm not into the racing scene but Ms. McCarthy surprised me. I particularly liked that Tamara was not a super thin heroine. She had body issues and had a terrible self-image and Elec Monroe loved her anyway! I loved the statement from Tamara's best friend when Tamara was dating a total loser. "Unless that man over there is hiding a penis the size of an anaconda in his shit brown pants, you are too young, too pretty, too successful and too much fun to settle for that." Yeah that's what best friends are for! Excellent book. I can't wait to read Imogen and Ty's story Hard and Fast.
