I loved this book. I always so surprised when I love a book by a first time author. Perkins-Valdez had it all: easy to read writing style, believable characters and an interesting story line.

Note: this one isn't the edition I read (Signet Classic, 1965), but Goodreads doesn't seem to have that one among its covers. My first time through. Really good in places, especially the beginning and whenever the focus is on Renfield, one of the great characters in English literature. Really boring and melodramatic in other places. Anticlimactic. Not as gothic as I'd hoped. Worth reading but expect occasional slogs.

Huh. Just finished this last night on the plane home. Didn't realize until looking at the reviews that it is a modern story of Shakespeare's King Lear. Tragic indeed. I don't think I've read King Lear, so I didn't make the connection. That, perhaps, makes me appreciate the book a bit more. I thought it was exceptionally well written, and I enjoyed her descriptions of the emotion in each scene. But it. was. not. uplifting.

Very religious and political. Might make you think twice about what you believe or could make you angry.

This is a classic gothic story. Well written by Daphne DuMaurier, it is an engrossing dark mystery set in the early twentieth century Cornwall, England. The story deals with a woman who becomes the second wife of a wealthy Englishman landowner who owns a beautiful estate known as 'Mandelay'. This estate is as much a character in this story as the people who live in it. I quite enjoyed this book and look forward to reading other mysteries written by this author. I recommend it to all that enjoy gothic mystery stories.

My boss lent me this book when I told him that I was interested in material culture and colonial anthropology. It's one of his tomes from college. Eventually I have to give it back to him.

One of the best reads I've had in some time. Highly recommended. Particularly for geeks who came of age in the 80s.
