Adrian Mole's all growed up, but he's still a goofy little twerp. I'm only 10 pages into this at time of writing, and I haven't kept up with all the books in-between (since the first one, there are a half dozen I missed), so I'm a little behind.

This is one of the most powerful books I've read. It's an autobiography of a young girl and her family during the oppressive Pol Pot regime. I traveled to Cambodia last year with only a faint idea of what the Khmer Rouge was and of what actually happened in that country in the late 1970s. Loung Ung's story is a story is one of survival. If it weren't, it would be too heartbreaking to bear. Under Pol Pot, people were forced to leave their homes in the cities and move into the countryside where they were to be "rehabilitated" as farmers where many died of starvation or were executed by the Khmer Rouge. It decimated the population. Today, forty percent of the population is under the age of 15. Cambodia is an amazingly beautiful place. The 1,000-year-old temples of Angkor are some of the most amazing structures ever built. The people of Cambodia are warm and welcoming. I am humbled by their strength.

This in my view is the worst children's book every written. I won't go into detail because you can read all that in other people's posts, but this book really does trouble me in so many ways. To begin with, after reading this book, it's pretty easy to see why society is so screwed up right now. The only moral to this book is take everything and return nothing. I can remember preschooler teachers I worked with praising this book and I just don't understand the attraction. I just don't get this book. If you want my advice, never let your child read this book!

i got about 3/4 way through this and liked it a lot. after that it just sat around and i never felt like reading any more of it. after about 2 weeks of guilt, i finally decided to put it away for another time and started something else. it was good, but not as exciting as i thought it would be.
