My gift to my groom when we married. Like all of Shel's works, they is so much more to it than what meets the eye.

This book was filled with really interesting information. The author took the reader through an imaginary tour of his home. In each room we visited he discussed historical developments that changed domestic life. It was a fun way to read history. There were several facts I could have gone without knowing (life in the past was a lot messier then most historical fiction implies). The one thing that takes a star away is the fact that the book almost covered too much information. There were several times the author seemed to ramble a bit. The last page and a half almost seemed to be a teaser for a future book he plans to write that, however interesting it may be, didn't really fit with the subject. To top off the frustration, it wasn't covered in enough depth to really justify the subject being brought up at all. I would recommend this book to anyone who really wants to know what domestic life was like in the past. I would not recommend it to anyone who wants to be blissfully ignorant.

Faulkner is a master of #1) stream of consciousness and #2) personal narratives. This book and the man have changed my life as a reader (and aspiring writer). His story of the Bundren family embarking on an funeral procession/odyssey swells with folklore simplicity and psychoanalytical mastery. Just the chapter by the recently deceased Addie is enough to give me the chills. Loves it!

At first I didn't really like this book, but after book club my opinion changed. This nonfiction narrative provided an insightful account to the life of a family in Afghanistan. It also provides a solid portayal of the role of women in Afghanistan and the culture's unfortunate rejection of most freedoms to women that us Americans so often take for granted.

From Lord Jim, I learned that Conrad's Marlowe is the best fictional story-teller ever created.

Originally posted at: http://whippedcream2.blogspot.com/201... A witch, and a wizard, and a werewolf... Oh, my! Raina's world turns upside down the day she discovers the statue that has been standing guard in her bedroom has suddenly vanished. She wonders why, but her attention is focused on keeping away from an alpha werewolf bent on taking her as his mate. Protection spells can only do so much and only if Michael means harm, which her body senses is not the case. Still she can't help feeling terrified whenever he's near and eventually her call for help is answered. She just didn't think Aleric would look so much like her missing statue or bring with him the news that her soul is in danger of being stolen. Now that pesky werewolf is back, but this time when she touches Michael, terror is the last thing she feels. The lust, the magic, and the men... what more could a girl want? Well there is the little matter of Raina possibly losing her soul ... Ms. Kitts manages to once again keep me on my reading toes with this laugh-out-loud and sexy story. The dialogue is witty and the characters unique. While a few of the scenes changed a bit abruptly, which disrupted some of the story flow, the racier moments between the witch and her wizard and werewolf more than made up for that. My favorite character came in the form of a very sensible if sarcastic, cursed wizard living with Raina as her snake familiar. Percy and Raina have an 'old married couple' kind of relationship and Percy's moment of triumph in the story is awesome. Fans of paranormal romance will definitely embrace this new story by Ms. Kitts.
Remember that book that Mercy got back in Iron Kissed that helped her learn about fae items? It was supposed to be on loan, but Mercy hasn't given it back yet. And now, the man who lent it to her is missing. And the fae are after her again. The set-up makes it sound like this is another book focused on the fae, but where it really counts, this book is about the wolves. Mercy has agreed to be Adam's mate --and she is now a member of his pack. But there are many pack members who are not on board with that. She becomes a target for people she thought were her friends. Not only does it threaten her relationship with Adam, it endangers both their lives. At the same time, Samuel is at the end of his rope. He is tiring of life and sees no reason to go on. We've seen this coming for a while, but that doesn't make it any easier when the time comes. I love the way his wolf continues to fight for life even when the man has given up. I love that Mercy holds on to him with both hands and even enlists Adam to her cause. What I don't love, was how this part of the story was resolved. I understand why the author chose the path she did, but it felt too easy. And nothing about this series has ever been easy. Samuel has struggled and struggled and sudden the solution just appears? It bugged me. I did enjoy the arc of the fae storyline --and it was great seeing Mercy and Adam finally getting to explore their love for each other. I think my favorite part of the book was when Mercy was able to see the bonds in her life for what they are. I can't wait to see how the author keeps it interesting in future installments. Sometimes happy = boring. But so far, our adventures with Mercy have been anything but that. 4 1/2 stars.
