I'll admit I didn't finish the book. Though I love what I know, I don't have a very strong knowledge of Brazilian music. Veloso tries to make the history approachable for the uninformed, but he's talking about music, mostly, so without knowing what these things SOUND like, it's all just too abstract to follow the chains of influence. This isn't helped by the writing style - I respect that he takes his subject so seriously, but it seems a bit overly academic and intellectual, and leans towards long, fairly convoluted sentences which I could probably parse if I wasn't also keeping tabs on who everybody was and what songs they sang, etc. To be fair it's hard to know how much of this is Veloso's intention and how much is the work of a translator. What I loved about the book was the sense of he and his peers building a cultural movement that mattered, mostly because they believed it did. This belief that art has a power (beyond its power as a commodity) to transform life is one of the main things missing in america today! I'd love to steep myself in the music of some of the main reference points and come back to the book someday.

Rather formulaic puzzle thriller. Some interesting stuff, but so convoluted with truth and hyperbole, it's hard to take very seriously. I will recommend this. The Book, is better then the Movie, which is better then the game... And I had the privelege of working on the game... ;D

Maddening, cryptic, like nothing I've read before. I have to think about this one some more. Also need extra tools to crack this egg.

I'm somewhat ashamed that I voted for the McCain/Palin ticket in 2008, but I'm even more thankful that I DID NOT vote for the Obama/Biden ticket.

I don't really know quite what to say. I mean it was an ok book, and the idea behind it, that was good, but somehow I just didn't connect with the writing. Nothing really happened, and the ending just did that, ended. I actually couldn't wait for it to end, I was constantly waiting for the exciting bit to come. It's not even that I don't like Meg Rosoff, because I loved her other books. Oh I don't know, maybe you'll like it, but I certainly didn't.

This autobiographical book is sickening and sad. How horrible to grow up in a household with two of the most dysfunctional parents one can imagine. Author Augusten Burroughs' revelations about his father make him out to be an emotional terrorist, a monster. The way his pets perished in the book is disturbing, and by the end (when he suspects his father of actually killing someone and hiding the body, as well as plotting to kill his mother) I just have to shake my head and wonder that he survived it all relatively sane.

Shawn Achor grew up in a middle class family and applied to Harvard on a dare and got in. Since he got in unexpectedly he figured he should go there so he did and he stayed for 12 years. First as an undergrad, then a grad student and finally a professor. While he was there he noticed Harvard students were on average unhappy and he did a LOT of research into why. The result of his research is very interesting. The first half of his book tries to proof that happiness creates success, not the other way around. The second half deals with concrete ways to help yourself be happier. Overall a fantastic read!
