Very enjoyable novel! Fiction, just love it, particularly after reading two memoirs in a row. This book is nice ensemble of two sisters and their friends/intimates in the build up and let down of the dot.com era. With a Hasidic rabbi and his family in for the ride (and Greek chorus, as well).

Liked the message but thought the writing was terrible!

Read like a dissertation instead of a how-to book. Dense and difficult to follow, the book gave me found new to learn.

This should be categorized as young adult. Though the story of a young Chinese American boy and his Japanese American girlfriend has a lot of potential, I kept thinking it was going to be more profound than it ever became.
I like this one because you have to literally unravel the text. Also fab: Samson Agonistes. The language just rolls off your tongue. Milton was such a total jerk... and absolutely pretty at the same time.

Finally! A book by Auster that brings him back to his roots (a la ¨The New York Trilogy¨). This book brings back the mystery/intrigue that makes him such a good read. My sister and I had fun discussing the various metaphorical implications of the story.

** spoiler alert ** Back on the magical frontier with Eff Rothmer. She graduates from high school, and is trying to figure out what to do next--college? marriage? Nope, temp job! Which leads to practicing magic more and travelling out to the wilds of the midwest. (I'm not sure about the geography, but I think they're still in middle Iowa territory. I hope there's a map somewhere online.) She's becoming more sure of herself and what she wants, which makes her a good role model, as well as being sensible and handy with a gun. I'm hoping this is a trilogy; I have my suspicions what will be the Big Natural Bad in book 3 (the basilisk at the end of this book was telegraphed pretty early before the reveal. Although now that I think about it, why were so many carcasses buried? Had another group been about in the distant past?) Definitely a YA book in terms of plot, character, and complexity. Good writer.

We haven't read many Olivia books, but we've seen a lot of the TV series. This book was very much what I expected in terms of plot, but I was surprised that it wasn't as complicated a read as I anticipated. Natalie has been kind of into the idea of the circus lately, so I wanted a book to show her pictures of the circus. This worked out well because the plot wasn't too involved and there wasn't a lot of text.
