I'm not really big on reading a lot of biographical accounts, so this book wasn't by any stretch a must read. The leadership lessons and principals contained however are priceless. Anyone in a position of power or soon to be can draw great lessons from this book.

I haven't read any of this author's work, but after reading his upbringing, his work must be interesting! Being a jerk as a child, I guess he did eventually become a productive member of society when he became a child counselor and then with his teen fiction novels. It's nice how honest the author is about his upbringing. I nice read.

As part of a LibraryThing Group read of all of Dostoevsky's novels, in chronological order, this is the second. There are pros and cons to this book in my opinion. I did not like that all women are depressive and overwhelmed by emotion. I thought the ending was quite abrupt, but that is probably due to the fact that this book was intended to be a character study and was never officially finished. I did, however, enjoy the story and the development of the title character, Netochka Nezvanova, which is "loosely translated as 'nameless nobody' ". She lives a bleak life epitomized by passionate love for her stepfather, her adoptive sister, Katya, and adoptive mother, Mikhaila, and passionate despair at the loss, pain, and betrayals in her life. Everything is left unfinished in this book, which leaves me wanting just a bit more of it all!

Oh, how I love Cassandra Clare. In short time, I devoured her Mortal Instruments series (which I’ll write a review on eventually), falling in love with Clary and Jace. When the trilogy ended, I was devastated. I needed more of these Shadowhunters and more of the beautiful world that Cassandra Clare had crafted. Lucky for me, Clockwork Angel came out. This was the first in a series of prequels to The Mortal Instruments series. I was scared at first, thinking that it just would not stack up to her previous efforts, but I was so, so wrong. First of all, can I talk about that gorgeous cover? When I was wandering aimlessly through the bookstore (not even knowing that this book was out), I caught it out of the corner of my eye and was drawn in by the dark beauty. The whole cover has an old London, mysterious feel to it and I was in love. Now, the actual book. If I had doubts before, I have none now. Cassandra Clare cannot disappoint me–Clockwork Angel sucked me in during the first two pages and I had a hard time putting it down. I actually decided to read it for the Dewey 24-Hour Read-A-Thon, but was so sad that I would almost be finished the book that I kept putting it down so I could come back to it later. I didn’t want it to end! The character development was spot on and I can’t wait to see Tessa grow throughout the series. The clockwork creatures were terrifying to me, in a way–it made for a great Halloween read. And the love triangle between Tessa, Will, and Jem … well, of course, I’m on Team Will! It was great to see the characters from The Mortal Instruments in this series and I look forward to seeing how the new characters came to be. Each character has their own story to tell and it was nice to read a book and not have to refer back to previous pages to figure out who is who. All of that being said, I definitely enjoyed The Mortal Instruments more than this installment–who wouldn’t love Jace and Clary? Clary was such a great character and Tessa’s just not there yet for me–but it definitely holds a dear place on my bookshelf. In even more great news, the second book in this trilogy, Clockwork Prince, comes out THIS Saturday. I can’t wait to get my hands on it. It will be a great read during this snowy Alberta month. Thank you to Cassandra Clare for writing such amazing books!

This book was utterly haunting, and much of what Levi wrote has stayed with me ever since. One of the best Holocaust memoirs I've ever read.

I read this book because my daughter had all ready and I wanted to see what she was reading. It is very much like Harry Potter except the main characters have no magical powers. It's about two kids who have to stay for a couple weeks with grandparents they barely know. (the children's parents have to go on a cruise with fellow family members. they didn't want to go but were kind of forced to go on "vacation") The kids eventually find out that their grandparents are caretakers of a magical preserve. And there is the possibility that they may be allowed to take over when the grandparents retire. The magical creatures they present in the book are mostly not nice with a few exceptions. And there is the theme that danger is always present because of them living on a preserve. The children are present for Midsummer's eve, in which the creatures run wild for the night, yet another dangerous situation. If I remember correctly, their bedroom is "protected" by magic as long as children are in it and no adults are there. This is yet another children's story where adults are not always present and the kids eventually are on their own against evil and must save the day without knowing where to go for help. At one point, the girl does pray, not specifically to God, but it doesnt get answered at all. This disturbed me-why include it if you aren't going to use it? So many children's books do not present a higher power that will help them in times of trouble! I was disappointed with this book.

Half fictional, half non-fictional account of two of the greatest and possibly most troubled minds of the 20th century: Kurt Godel and Alan Turing. There's an interesting mix of logic, mathematics, and religion in this quick read.
