This book is a little cheesy at times, but if you can suspend that, as you would disbelief for a sci-fi movie, this book does have some good messages. Clearly this would never happen in real life, so I think the story told within should be looked at as more of a fable and an ideal, not an actual story. Otherwise you get bogged down in thinking "that would never happen" and it just ruins it. I find it difficult to suspend my rationale for a story or movie, but this book does have some good messages if you can just recognize it as a simple story.
This explains so much, and is a must read for anyone interested in the relationship of eating and health!

This book took me totally by surprise. I was expecting a self-help-how-to-live-with-being-single type of book. Definitely not the "Does this sound like you? Guess, what? You're okay!" read that I got. It started out almost as a justification for being single, but the further into the book I got, I realized that this is who I am. I have been quirkyalone-in-denial for most of my adult life. Reading this book has helped me feel secure in my decision to hold out for someone really special, that I might feel lonely sometimes but I am no where near being alone, and even if I don't find someone worthwhile to spend my time with... I'm still a complete person. I've passed my copy on to The Captain to see what she thinks.

Aunt Helen lent me this book several years ago. Enjoyed it so much that I bought a copy of my own and plan to re-read.

Stick is an abused teen. His parents are controlling, unloving, physically and mentally abusive. While Stick could react by being angry, bitter, mean and abusive himself, instead he is kind, gentle, loving, and he cherishes the small acts of kindness that neighbors, friends and others give to him. Stick still suffers from those horrible growing pains from child to teen. His "growing" attraction to all things female, made me laugh. Stick's desire to try out scenes from a stolen Penthouse magazine with his best friend Emily made him seem more real. Stick's relationship with his brother Bosten is the focus of the book. However, I really think it is about Stick growing up and forming his own identity instead of just being Bosten's little brother. Some parts of the book dragged. When Stick goes on a search for his brother, some of the interactions with characters along the way came across as too convenient. However, towards the end of the book, I realized how important those interactions were to Stick's new strength as an individual. I loved Stick's Aunt. She was hope and comfort. She was Stick's strength when he didn't have any of his own and she was his future when he finally stood up to his abusive family.
I get what Borges is trying to do. He doesn't really tell stories. He uses language to create puzzles. I get it, but I don't find it that interesting. My motto as a reader is, "tell me a story," so it's not a shock that I'm not a fan of Borges' work.
