I've read a lot of reviews that complain that this book is "too long." Though it's definitely not a quick read, I really savored every bit of it. It's equal parts historical drama, comedy of manners, and gothic horror. If those genres don't appeal to you, you'll prob think it's boring.

It was just OK for me, but nothing special. The character of James Winter who is a "liar and a cheat and a whore" was not likeable. Some bad guys, rats, villains are likeable, sometimes because they pay for their crime, or they try to make it up to the people they wronged. This James Winter did not pay, did not atone for his acts. Sedgewick kept doing all the work, all the pursuing. James was not proactive, he was just full of his misery and oblivious to everything but his wrecked life. He was a weak "weak" character, the kind I can't stand.

Lord John and the Hellfire Club was a classic detective story, though I thought the manner in which Grey was hurled into it was a bit abrupt. Being a short story, I suppose he had to be. It wasn't my favourite out of the bunch. Lord John and the Succubus was good entertainment! I thought it was particularly fun how Gabaldon solved this mystery. Poor John. Gets chased by all the wrong people and can never be with the ones he likes. It was also interesting to get a bit more insight into John's life as a soldier. So far, I've read loads about the man being a soldier, but I never really got to see a lot of him *being* a soldier (the odd battle here and there aside). Lord John and the Haunted Soldier was my favourite out of the lot. I loved Lord John and the Brotherhood of the Blade, so getting to continue where that story left of was awesome. Two main storylines in this one; the faulty exploding cannon and the runaway Anne Thackeray. The exploding canon story held most of my interest, but I like how the Anne story unfolded in the end. For the first time I managed to keep track of the characters, which was fun. I also like how John starts writing letters to a certain redhaired prisoner.

This is the first Asian-American history book. Everyone should read it and get an immigration story that is not taught in American history classes.

On one hand, I liked how this book was short stories from the Mars series. On the other hand, it seemed discombobulated to me.

This one was good, but it discussed cutting, ALOT. If you don't want your teen cutting, you may not want them to read this. BUT, if you want to show them the ill effects of cutting, you can use this book. The story line was good though.
That was fab :) Totally different from what I expected but really good. 4.5 stars

I got rather inebriated, visited a bookstore, and now I have a copy of Alongshore. Guess I'll have to read it now.

You can never go wrong with a Flavia de Luce mystery. These books are always a delight. If you're a fan of the first three books, I'd be surprised if you didn't also enjoy this one.
