I liked the way the characters in this book are developed--all members of a family--each with a "condition" that makes it difficult to lead life as they would like. It kept my interest and made me think about how our family and our familial relationships in youth affect our adulthood.

Finally finished this one, shortly after my birthday. I had meant to read it on my birthday, for obvious reasons, but I'm glad I didn't, since most of the stories are rather depressing (plus I had more exciting things to do than read). But I am glad I read it. The stories can be downers but are very good, some more than others, some simply wonderful. Almost all worthwhile and intriguing. Some aren't very Murakami, but then, he didn't write them, so that's to be expected. Overall, though, a worthwhile read. Great snapshots of human life.

I started this book off like a shot, got caught up in the weird emotions and sexual tension of Miller's rambling, and never looked back. They made my bus rides take on a surreal edge every day. And while i will never think of vaginas the same way again, I will also never think of great writing and urban adventures the same, after Miller's prose. My copy is heavily marked. "I have no money, no resources, no hopes. I am the happiest man alive. A year ago, six months ago, I thought I was an artist. I no longer think about it. I am. Everything that was literature has fallen from me. There are no more books to be written, thank God. This then? This is not a book. This is libel, slander, defamation of character. This is not a book, in the ordinary sense of the word. No, this is a prolonged insult, a gob of spit in the face of Art, a kick in the pants to God, Man, Destiny, Time, Love, Beauty ... what you will. I am going to sing for you, a little off key perhaps, but I will sing. I will sing while you croak, I will dance over your dirty corpse.... To sing you must first open your mouth. You must have a pair of lungs, and a little knowledge of music. It is not necessary to have an accordian, or a guitar. The essential thing is to want to sing. This then is a song. I am singing."

Love this story -A woman analyzing her own insanity; an overbearing husband causing her insanity; an early commentary on feminism; the roadblock we all suffer in life when we are withheld from the things and people we love.

Through his adventures both in and out of the graveyard, Bod learns many of the skills he needs to survive. Bod's graveyard family is filled with a variety of interesting characters who all do their best to care for him and teach him whatever he needs to know. The bittersweet ending is fantastic. Highly recommended!

I think this book was amazing, it is one of my favorite books, and it just shows how a girl thought she was just ugly but then she realized how gorgeous she was.
