I loved, loved, loved this book from beginning to end. Everyone should read this book to have a greater appreciation for our countries veterans. Hillenbrand did an amazing job in researching and presenting the mass among of information that it took to write this story. With the exception of Left to Tell, this is the best wartime survival story I have ever read.

I really enjoy Kay Hooper's psychic suspense novels, and I enjoyed this one, too, but there were several things that bothered me. First, the bad guy's memories of child abuse were a little too graphic. Second, The bad guy (Samuel) and the good guy (Sawyer) had names too similar. It made POV transitions momentarily confusing. Thirdly, the showdown with the powerful enemy wrapped up so quickly that it felt anti-climactic.

As I read through the vignettes and essays included here, one thought kept coming up - A giant in out day, and I missed him. So, I asked my wife (she lived in Boston) - Did she ever go to hear him - "Once " she says. I asked my neighbor (He has a degree from YU) - Did he ever go learn? - "Occasioanlly - I was not in that depth". Well- neither am I, and the opportunity was not there. Maybe once in a lifetime, we have such opportunity to know of someone like this. Andif the chance is there to hear the person - do SO!. If not, then read and read more about him. The Rav was a MAYBE once in a lifetime phenomena.

Wow, a lot of complaints about the level of profanity in this book. Profanity isn't always puerile, and this author deploys it to great effect. From a scientific standpoint, I have to mention that, if you look up several of the topics on your googlebox, you will find considerable debate about their validity.

I am an admitted (surface) neat freak, in that I like everything that is out that I can see to be organized and put in its place, but I don't fold my laundry; I put my laundry in designated drawers, but all thrown in together. This book is very interesting in the psychology of organization vs. messiness and has a strong argument that asserts that allowing a little bit of messiness into your life can actually be a good thing. The author cites several examples that everyone can relate to. It's opened up my mind just a little bit more about neatness and mesiness, and negotiating a healthy level of both in my life. This was an interesting and fast read.

Cormac McCarthy is an incredible writer. That's all I can say right now.
After hearing about this book from a friend, I went out and bought it! Unfortunately, I couldn't finish it...even after getting more than halfway through. I kept waiting for the turning point where I wouldn't want to put it down or atleast a point that would make me want to come back for more. But ugh...too boring. Turns out my friend didn't like it either and was having the same problem...but she forgot to tell me that part! Thanks S!! >I
