A Russian classic, 'Anna Karenina' is a lengthy yet engrossing epic of a changing Russia near the turn on the twentieth century. It has many well-drawn characters, the main character being Anna Karenina, her busy husband-- a government official, her brother and the members of his family, Count Vronsky-a military ladies man who charms many a woman, and a man named Levin who lives in the country and his family. Much is happening in this book-it is just before the start of the great Russian Revolution of the early twentieth century. Many of the characters are military or government officials and workers. The lead characters are wealthy landowners with the poor and the workers taking a smaller role. Although this book is specific to Russian history it is also rich in telling the universal stories which are shared the world over. It is a story of love, of pain, of the struggle to find meaning in life, to find one's place in the world. I found this book fascinating. Written by Leo Tolstoy, a great Russian writer, it is written with in a timeless manner. In this, even in the twenty-first century this story can be related to without problem. I recommend to anyone who is interested in Russian history, epic stories, and dramatic romance.

Some graphic novel. Didn't expect it to be so serious and touching.

Universal in its themes -- and just a great story in portraying a wonderfully romantic, yet brutal, world.

A wonderful collection of interconnected stories that all ring w/authenticity and surprise. How they all move wonderfully together is this book's greatest accomplishment.

Bob Shea is a newer children's author and illustrator. His previous two books (Big Plans, Dinosaur vs Bedtime) have been brilliant. This new book tells the story of a bird who has gotten a new pair of socks. These new socks give him confidence. They also open up his imagination to dream of where his new socks will take him.

This book is set in an office. It could be any office, but this happens to be an ad agency in Chicago. The office has a typical wide array of personality types and petty office squabbles, but by using the device of narrating from the group as a whole, you see how an office tends to bond together in situations, regardless of its dysfunctions and disagreement. The narrative gimmick of using fist person plural (a first for me!)does not mean we don't learn the stories of the individuals in this office. They all get their turn, as their stories are told by the group as they perceived them. And a quirky, wickedly funny picture starts to develop of this office and its denizens. We learn that this company is having financial difficulties, forcing layoffs. Each employee responds to this crisis in their own way: practical jokes, reciting poetry, stealing office equipment, etc. But what the author really excels at is poking gentle fun at corporate culture, "groupthink", and the collective fear of a company on the rocks. I ended up really enjoying this satirical look at office dynamics, and recommend it for anyone who ever did a stint in cubicle hell.

In Book 2, the kids of the circle fight off the pirates. The plot device with Tris's cousin is transparent from the start. And the evil pirate is shown to be a brutal slavemaster, but ultimately, his character is a cardboard cutout. And we know almost nothing new about Neko and any of the other teachers. Once the mages figure out gunpowder, the adult reader wonders why they don't make some of this stuff themselves and hurl it back at the pirates. This is a book from the kid's perspective, so the lack of depth in adults may be deliberate. Kid's just don't know. But the angst and the kid's powers captures the fantasy of Harry Potter. Recommended for young readers.

This is one of those books that I had seen floating around the web and heard various book bloggers talking about, and yet I kept pushing it aside in favor of something else. And now I'm wondering . . . what the heck was my problem?! Paranormalcy was a fun and fantastic read! I absolutely adored the main character, Evie. In fact, she's one of my favorite Young Adult heroines and ranks right up there with Rose Hathaway. And Lend? We all need a Lend in our lives, right? Kiersten White, I am a fan for life, and I can't wait to get my hot little hands on everything else you've written!
Whilst most children who read Morpurgo's stories will know him for his animal tales, this is the story of a child's life in Palestine. Told in turn by an adult film maker and Palestian 8 year old, Said, The Kites are Flying is a simple, beautiful depiction of the physical loss war creates and the hope and humanity it can foster in those ensnared in it. Mr Max, the filmaker, and Said are brought together under the kite tree in Said's village, which looks out onto the dividing wall between Palestine and Israel in the occupied territories. Said's kites prove to hold more significance than one might initially imagine, and his quest to send them over the wall to the girl with the blue headscarf becomes a mission, which on succesful completion, shows the power of unspoken friendship transcending bariers of race and religion, from which we all might learn. The illustrations in the book are beautiful and understated, in sympathy with Morpugo's prose. This is a wonderful story. Perfect for for key stage two children to read alone or a chapter at a time as a group exercise. As a text to underpin project work, perhaps children making their own kites, cooking honey cake, exploring landscapes through art, or writing their own diaries, it's brilliant.

Dawkins is a total jerk, but he's a total jerk who happens to be right. Like many, many others, this book gave me the kick in the pants needed to cross over from namby-pamby agnostic to out of the closet atheist.
