The first book was good. This book was AMAZING!!! It was a little slow to start but when we finally got to the latest quest, it went very quickly. I hate that it ended in a cliffhanger but I couldn't put the book down for the last 100 pages. You meet some new characters like Frank and Hazel. They are as cool, funny and loveable as Percy and the Greek crew. I can't wait for The Mark of Athena!!! If you liked all of the Percy Jackson series and Lost Hero, you will love this latest installment!!! Senatus Populusque Romanus!

How I Came To Read This Book: I spied it on a fellow Good Reader's to read list and picked it up from the library. The Plot: This book essentially tells wannabe writers (and avid readers) that the best way to appreciate writing is by close reading and focusing on the details that make great writing what it is. Through the analysis of everything from gesture and dialogue to sentence and narration, Prose explores how varied good writing is - but drives home the fact the details are what matter both on the reader and writer's end. The Good & The Bad: This was a great book, relatively easy to read even when some of the sample passages were a bit long or dry, and it offered lots of constructive advice (almost too much to digest admittedly) that all boiled down to the fact selective details are critical to good writing. I'd be quite tempted to actually go out and buy a copy of the book if only so I could reference certain sections and suggestions when writing in a certain style. The only downsides would be the end drags on quite a bit - there are about 3-4 sections that easily could have been the end of the book and felt a bit like filler. Also, while the advice is the book when broken down is helpful, it also makes for a slightly repetitive read. By the end you'll probably feel like enough already! That being said, this is a great resource for writers in particular and will definitely influence my close reading in the future. The Bottom Line: Better for writers than readers, but insightful nonetheless. Anything Memorable: Coincidentally the next book in my to read pile is The Great Gatsby, which is referenced for 'setting' in this book. 50-Book Challenge: Book #35 in 2009.

I have a terrible habit of reading quickly, I actually think I may have read this book before and forgotten it. This is usually not a good sign, however the story is fascinating and I could see myself reading the series. Unfortunately, I don't think the character development in this book is enough to hold me.

Perception picks up where Clarity left off. Another great book. Much like the first in the series, it is about a murder mystery that is happening in a small narrow-minded town by the sea. The characters were believable but some were left to wither and die since they did not really have much for "substance". Mystery was well thought out and kept me guessing for awhile but wasn't a huge challenge to figure out the who and why. Otherwise still a good Sunday afternoon book. Would better suit a girl in her teens/tweens if she is into murder mystery books with paranormal undertones and bits of romance sprinkled about. I honour this book with 3.5 stars.

This book is an enheartening story that deals with the choice that many of us face: choose or passion or choose the big paycheck?? If we are lucky, we never have to make that choice. Happiness cannot be bought.

I do not generally read teen lit, but I fully admit to being enticed by the cover and the lure of a dystopian-future novel. I was surprised at how engrossed I became with the storyline and the writing. This is definately a novel with mature themes and occasionally questionable "science," but I chose to suspend my judgement and read this within the mindset of a book created for an audience of 9th-10th graders. I am looking forward to following this trilogy of books.

I liked it but felt at the time it was missing something.

Fascinating. Inspired by the failure of the shearers' strikes in 1890 and the unresolved industrial trouble between pastoralists and their labour force (rouseabouts and handymen as well as shearers) idealists, intellectuals and working men decided that they could build a better society in another country. Led by newspaperman, William Lane, an association was formed, money raised, people signed up and eventually the first boatload of 220 colonists left on the Royal Tar from Sydney on July 16, 1893 to settle in Paraguay. Some of my relatives were members of New Australia and then the breakaway colony, Cosme. Souter's fine book is well illustrated with archival images which are held at Fisher Library at Sydney University. Here's how my great grandfather, John Lane, canvassed for new settlers for the Paraguayan experiment on a return trip to Australia in 1902: … he bought a bicycle for £7 in Adelaide and pedalled north-east to Broken Hill, White Cliffs, Bourke and Glenn Innes, proclaiming the message of Cosme to all who would listen. The bicycle had a built-in water tank, and on the rack behind him Lane carried a magic lantern, some glass slides of Cosme, and a collection of Paraguayan butterflies. It was midsummer when he left Adelaide. While travelling, he wore a polo-necked jumper: he claimed that the jumper, always soaked with perspiration, kept him cool on the same principle as a "Coolgardie Safe". Before the trip was over he had lost one and a half stone in weight. Here's the link for this 1751km (1088 mile) journey: http://maps.google.com.au/maps?f=d&am... It all failed in the end, some stayed behind in both colonies, married the locals and the communally held land and equipment reverted to private ownership. My great grandfather brought his family of a wife and four daughters back to Queensland where he lived and worked as a teacher. William Lane, his older brother, went to New Zealand with his family and again became a newspaperman, but a rather conservative one, leaving behind his passionate concerns for the plight of the working man.

Over all I thought the book was interesting. The concepts regarding the total invasion of privacy by the government were powerful, imaginative and timely. Excellent use of imagery throughout. However, I did not like the ending too much. The arcane forms of torture and interrogation that were described seemed to be a reach. And it was not at all clear if the main character lives on, or merely hallucinates the remainder of his life.
