Dork Diaries 11: Tales from a Not-So-Friendly Frenemy Thư viện Sách hướng dẫn

http://iwriteinbooks.wordpress.com/20... Gilead is not so much a novel as it is a contemplative work of philosophical fiction. Through the words of Congregationalist minister John Ames, we are guided through his life as a spiritual leader, the good, the bad and the ugly. Though the book, itself is small and the words simple, the thoughts are heavy and powerful. The eternal questions of goodness v. evil, predestination and variations on love and life are discussed in a rambling, folksy and relatable manner. My habit has been to read books of thought pertaining to existentialism and a deeper, often darker, perception of human kind and the metaphysical world. It was, for this reason, that I actually found myself enjoying a new experience in reading a much more “centrally christian” take on the spiritual world through a more mainstream approach. Not that there is much preaching of when or how to act, between the covers, here, but rather, it specifically does not give any creed in passing. It simply, peacefully comes upon questions and then moves on. I will say that I was frustrated with the pace of the book more than a few times. I think that this might have been a book to read in short snippets before bed rather than try to swallow as a full, linear offering. I think that once I adopted the former approach, I made my peace with the slower parts and really enjoyed it for what it was, not what I was trying to make it become.

(The same review for Vol. 1 and 2) This is a raucous adventure that runs the reader along a taut high tension line. Dahlquist insists on action, relentlessly dealing it out like a meth addled blackjack croupier. This novel reeks of all the "mistakes" that a first book suffers from: too many characters, too many storylines, extreme violence, and ultimately the scenes are scenario driven. I'm thankful for this naivete. Refined authors tend to cut, and smaller stories end up quieter, whereas this is a pipe bomb. This is big and unapologetic. It seems these days that most adventure stories are tucked away in Children's Lit, or buried deep in Fantasy schlock. This hearkens back to everything that folks like Haggard, Burroughs, or Howard were shooting for. He undoubtedly leans heavily on genre tropes, as the story (mystery) wraps up neatly as a parlor room drama, down to your standard "Before I kill you, Mr. Bond" confessionals and the "Ah-ha, now I have the upper hand" reversal moments. But it is all in good fun. If I have a real complaint about the book it is that the women are ALWAYS defined by their sexuality (either over or undersexed). In the book there is only one male character that is defined by his sexuality, so it stands out as evenly one-sided. Ms. Temple, while a great character is constantly put into awkward sexual situation to define her (the way that the Doctor is constantly confronted with his fear of heights, ha). It would have been more just to spread the sexual encounters through all of the main characters for the sake of the read rather than fulfilling Dahlquist's little wet dream for his character. Still though, this has been a tremendously fun read. The 5 stars rating is for how much I enjoyed it rather than how "good" it is.

Kim Vogel Sawyer is one of my favorite authors because there’s no work involved when it comes to reading her stories. I just fall right in and get lost in the pages, as Kim works her literary magic. Courting Miss Amsel was a delightful read and I enjoyed every minute of it! This book is about Edythe Amsel, a young woman with progressive ideas and a passion to teach. The quiet little town of Walnut Hill is quickly turned upside down with her arrival and her ideas. Replacing the previous tyrannical teacher, Mr. Shanks, not only does Edythe make changes in school discipline, she also has big dreams of broadening her student’s views and empowering them with knowledge. None of this goes over very well with some of the narrow-minded parents who want things to stay as they always have been. In the process of causing a stir, Edythe also gains the attention of most of the eligible bachelors who waste no time in vying for her affections. She realizes very quickly that she must somehow convey the message that she is not interested in marriage, before she’s bombarded with male suitors. But as loudly as she protests, Edythe can’t deny her attraction to Joel Townsend, the handsome bachelor who is raising his two nephews. A fun, fast paced read that will give fans of historical fiction and Kim’s books another reason to sing her praises. Read more of my reviews
