I loved this book and the intriguing story line. So much left to the imagination and the guessing that takes place with each chapter. Good book and highly recommended!

This Reacher installment seemed slow moving, kind of boring, and unrealistic compared to the previous books in the series. Hope the next one is better.

I still love Lolita and I refuse to rate this any less than five stars, even if I wasn't as enchanted this 3rd time around. HH (as read by Jeremy Irons no less - thanks Janka-Bridges for the audio recomendation) was charming and hapless and awful as ever. I will say I picked up a lot more about the Lo character this time around. She always seemed like a cipher to me in previous readings (for good reason) but this time around I felt like I was recognizing her attempted agency. Anyway, still a work of art but despite my best efforts I had a harder time loving it in this reading.

Chabon writes beautiful sentences. Even better he writes beautiful sentences that do not detract from the joy and magic of his stories. The book perfectly encapsulates its own little world and the reader feels and experiences all of it, words, thoughts, smells, desires. It is really perfect, and perfectly engaging. Joe and Sam are marvelously drawn, complex characters and Chabon manages to write a book about the holocaust, loss, survival, and love without becoming at all trite or sentimental. In fact this novel, set in the world of pulp fiction and comic book heroes, has all the characteristics of the pulps: incredible luck and happenstance, adventure, magic, nick-of-time rescues and characters saved from the brink of disaster. And yet the book moves beyond these conventions, making use of them to tackle serious subjects and complex human issues. It is literature thinly veiled as escapism, admitting that escapism is often exactly what we need to get through the tragedy of life.

Still enjoying this series...although I am ready to be done. Can't believe the author decided to write a 4th book. I have other books I want to read. I have other responsibilities. I think authors should be sensitive to our (the readers') busy lives. Oh, and I was a bit disturbed that this book seemed to glorify cutting and disfiguring ones self. I have another problem with this book but I can't go into it here without giving the story away. But it has to do with Dr. Cable.

I actually listened to this on CD through Dave's recommendation on my way back and forth to work and I was pleasantly surprised. I enjoyed it and would listen to the rest of the Ender Saga.
