New York today is the same as New York of 1948 but also SO different. I didn't fully get the geography, but that's because I don't venture past my set paths (neighborhood downtown, church uptown and some regular tourist spots in between). But that was also a point E.B. White made in this slim book - basically an essay about the city. I read this paragraph aloud to Shawn: "New York is nothing like Paris; it is nothing like London; and it is not Spokane multiplied by sixty or Detroit multiplied by four. It is by all odds the loftiest of cities. It even managed to reach the highest point in the sky at the lowest moment of the depression. The Empire State Building shot twelve hundred and fifty feet into the air when it was madness to put out as much as six inches of new growth." This gives me hope in this time of our new depression (in more ways than one, I'm afraid) - and how beautiful is that writing? I completely agree with the jacket's description of White's style: "a pure and plainspoken literary style: his writing was characterized by whit, sophistication, optimism and moral steadfastness." I mean, the man was responsible for "Elements of Style," so he knows what he's doing. And he's writing about my city (well actually I'm just borrowing it). I think I'll pass along this copy to my Gran, since it's written about New York around the time/just after the time she visited my Grandpa when he was stationed here.

I enjoyed this book a lot. Natalie MacLean's style of writing and wine descriptions appeal to me. She describes things as I would, which makes it easy to understand and to pick wines I think I would enjoy. Plus she is a hoot! Interested in wine? Pick up this book and subscribe to her newsletter today - or this weekend :)

I only read the abridged version, but warning, don't just buy the cheap-o paperback at Barnes&Noble, research the best translation, it can change your reading experience!

I've never seen this play performed, and I know that when I eventually do it will be far better than it was while reading it. While Stoppard's stage directions are impeccable (undoubtedly to the great annoyance of many actors & directors), so much of the play relies on timing and action rather than dialogue that merely reading the words feels thin and unsatisfying. I also didn't have the luxury of reading it all the way through at one go, so I probably missed a lot of connections between acts and such. Despite all of these drawbacks, however, I liked it a lot, and I can't wait until I can see it properly.

I've 'read' this series in audio book format. After the initial hiccups of working out how to best listen to a story, I began to enjoy this series. The first book, I found having to remind myself constantly that it was teen literature, and to get beyond the simplicity of the language used within the book. By the time I'd finished the first book, I was keep to continue reading on about Bella's adventures. I enjoyed how it portrayed 'good' vampires, against 'bad' vampires and the growing relationships between all the characters. The final book, in the series was very long, and yet I still found myself quite sad when it finished. Bella and Edward had become a part of my leisure time and I was reluctant to let them go. When I was nearing the end of the series, I was wondering whether or not Stephanie Meyer would write another book in the series. It's certainly left open enough for that to happen. I am very much looking forward to watching the movie.
This is the epic reveal! In this book, they tell you who The Master is, and they reveal a shocking betrayal. I really like how Jake's love really kicks off with Briar. Too bad their love isn't eternal. I love how the author slowly reveals all troubles. READ IT!

After reading The City Of Dreaming Books, I was eager to read another book by Walter Moers. This was the next one I found. It's a good book but not as captivating as The City Of Dreaming Books. The illustrations are great!

He had me going for about 2/3 of the book . . then I got frustrated enough with the characters to not care anymore.

This was my first book from this author and I liked it. Didn't love it, though. It was a good historical, but I wanted something more from the main characters. More passion, love etc. Perhaps I should try some of her other works... We'll see =)
