Een pak beter dan 'The Other Boleyn Girl' en gefundenes Fressen voor history buffs & tudor enthusiasts (hey, did I just use 3 languages in one sentence?). Het verhaal gaat over vrouw nummer 4 (Anne of cleves) en vrouw nummer 5 (Katherine Howard) van de verschrikkelijke Henry VIII. De plot wordt verteld vanuit het standpunt van deze 2 vrouwen, én dat van Jane Boleyn (schoonzus van vrouw nummer 2, Anne Boleyn). Het knappe is dat Gregory, hoewel de doorsnee lezer wel weet hoe het afloopt (4 overleeft het, 5 niet, Jane ook niet), er toch flink de spanning weet in te houden. Nu die Gregory boeken in wat mooiere covers steken, en ik zet ze met plezier op de boekenplank.

Hell, it's summer and I'm entitled to some light reading, right? Exploits was just perfect. The main character is a Canadian boy who begins the novel pig headed, and selfish. He ends the novel only slightly redeemed, but by then the tone of self-congratulation is more ironic and easier to bear. The narrator's voice is engaging enough, but I found I was constantly irritated with his attitude. As the book progresses and the character grows, however, the jokes become much funnier and the book becomes a real joy to read.

Another classic I had to read. Just from the first sentence I was hooked. "If you really want to hear about it, the first thing you'll probably want to know is where I was born, and what my lousy childhood was like, and how my parents were occupied and all that before they had me, and all that David Copperfield kind of crap, but I don't feel like going into it, if you want to know the truth." Who writes like that? So blunt and so real? I knew from there I was in for an adventure. The story is narrated by Holden Caulfield, your typical cynical teenager, who just got kicked out of prep school, and decides to spend the next few days wandering the streets, spending dough and pointing out all the "phonies" that exist in the world. Although some of his pessimistic observations ring true, Holden's outlook left me very frustrated. He's that typical teenager who could do a lot with his life, everyone knows it, but he refuses. As for the book as a whole, it left me unfulfilled. I wanted more from Holden. Maybe that's part of the scheme of things. Since Holden is the narrator we the reader get to experience what everyone close to him experiences, his lack of effort. We know he can offer more but he doesn't, which leaves you somewhat unsatisfied. Sort of brilliant in a way. I do have to say I've never read anything so real from a completely un-real made up character. I can see why so many guys liked this book in high school. It dares to expose the lonliness and awkwardness of young teens in a world where everyone seems to belong somewhere.

I love Stephanie Meyers storytelling ability, and Breaking Dawn was full of some amazing storytelling. I was a little uncomfortable with the idea though of younger readers and teens reading some of the content of this book. Some of it was a little too borderline for me in thinking of younger readers. I enjoyed the outcome though of the series and enjoyed seeing Bella progress in unexpected ways.

While thoroughly entertaining, this was no great work of literature. I enjoyed Weisberger's writing style and her sense of humor and sarcasm. There were times when I was confused by chain of events (within a paragraph, nothing larger scale) or wished for the characters to be developed more -- and for Miranda to show more of a heart, like they did in the film version. This book also made me want to learn more about haute couture and The New York Post (!) among other things.

Read just before my trip to Normandy to see the landing beaches. Was looking for more of an informative history textbook...this was lots of disjointed paragraphs about the people of D-Day with some informative paragraphs about history in between. I'm not un-American, I just didn't like the way it was written.

as with the previous book in the series (gods of mars) the constant up-and-down, saved-at-the-last-minute-from-the-jaws-of-death device was a bit tedious. there is huge potential in this series and i look forward to the upcoming film based on this trilogy. i give the trilogy the benefit of the doubt because it was a (weekly?) serial and Burroughs was clearly writing in a stream of conscious manner from episode to episode. if he were consciously writing a trilogy, he would probably have done a less predictable job with pacing. also: thumbs up for action. thumbs down for the john carter's hubris. thumbs down for backing off of the atheist theme of the previous book -- he must have received some mail .... (as with the other 3, this is the e-book, read on an ipod touch).
