While I appreciated this book's concept and effort at historical fiction, I found it hard to believe. I thought that the voice of the main character, May Dodd, sounded like a man trying to write from a female perpsective, which became increasingly annoying as the book went on. I found the description of the Cheyene Native Americans and their nomatic life very interesting and I think that I would be like to read more about this and other Native American groups during this disgraceful time period in US history.

This is an absolutely wonderful book - just recently finished it - and although some would think it is a "dark" book - it's not - gives you such a great perspective on taking the difficult things in our life and learning from them and seeing the best in every situation!

The style of this book is so lyrical. I love the story as well as the characters in this novel. The southern setting of the book is so vividly portrayed that it really did transport me into the narrative.

Reviewed by Allison Fraclose for TeensReadToo.com Thirteen-year-old Kirstie Scott lives with her mother and brother at Half Moon Ranch, which her mother built up into a guest ranch after the death of Kirstie's grandfather. While on a Saturday trailride with a group of guests, Charlie, one of their cowhands, asks Kirstie to lead the group into Dead Man's Canyon while he helps the guests cross a tricky stream swollen with melting snow. Following the senses of Lucky, her trusted palomino, Kirstie enters the canyon to find a herd of wild horses trapped in the back. Their leader, a beautiful black stallion, reacts aggressively, and rain begins to pour as Kirstie freezes in an effort to not upset the herd any further. Kirstie is about to turn around and leave the canyon when one of the ranch horses, spooked by her inexperienced rider, races into the canyon and up the trail, causing an avalanche on the weakened ridge. When the dust settles, Kirstie is unharmed thanks to Lucky, but the black stallion is trapped under rocks, badly hurt. Now, trapped with the herd while Charlie goes back to the ranch for help, Kirstie does what she can for the stallion, and she wonders if it will be enough... I loved reading about this resourceful heroine! Her courage and confidence in her own abilities is what really drives the plot. This story should resonate with any girl who loves horses and loves to trust her own instincts.

I couldn't finish it, too dark. Anorexia is something that disturbs me and I cannot relate to personally. I understand people who have issues with overeating, that I understand. The opposite kind of seems freaky to me. No offense to any friends I have who struggle with undereating. It also starts out with a suicide which gets a thumbs down in my book. She is a talented writer, for sure, just too angsty perhaps. I think I would have loved this book in high school but as an adult I like fake, happy fairy tales.

"Pain was greedy; it demanded all of her attention." "Being good to somebody is just like being mean to somebody. Risky. You don't get nothing for it." "...Eva's refusal was not due to pride or vengence but to a plain unwillingness to see the swallowing of her own flesh into the dirt, a determination not to let the eyes see what the heart could not hold."

The child of the prince and princess grows up raised by fairies. This tells of her quest to find out who her pareents are/were. The power play around the kings and sorcerers of the fighting kingdoms rounds it out. Good book.

Reading the words on our American monuments gives the import of our history. Having been in Washington, D.C. several times and visiting the monuments, this book will enhance my knowledge of our memorials.
