'Geektastic' - the word itself is probably the best way to sum up this book. A combination of short stories, comics, and illustrations by an assortment of artists and writers in various nerdy careers makes up the whole of this book, and to anyone in the same geeky boat, it really shows. The stories range from your average Live Action Role Playing (LARPing) socially awkward high schooler to forum text-based roleplayers, those living the life enough to be responsible for running the conventions that the thousands flock to every year to the attendees of such conventions. The conflicts? Should one still be associating with an ex-girlfriend who poisoned and killed your immortal MMORPG character? Should one trust the online characters that someone portrays as their personality? Should Buffy fans be allowed to rally against one of their own? And most importantly – what happens when a long night at a convention ends up with a Jedi sleeping with a Klingon? All such issues are dealt with and discussed, and to your all-encompassing geek, many of the stories strike close to home, and often make you smile with joy at recognizing every tiny reference that the just-as-nerdy authors slip in. Because of the different authors in this book, it is difficult to pinpoint one particular author or story and analyze their writing, but in each story, it is apparent that the writers are determined to leave their reader feeling like a part of the story. With the group that this particular accumulation of stories is aimed at, this means lots and lots of mentioning of obscure and esoteric things. Over the course of the book, I found myself chuckling several times at the multiple references to Doctor Who (the collection of roleplayers all wearing the scarves of incredible length was a nice touch), and Buffy (‘Excuse me, I have a vampire to slay!’), while also finding nice, small tributes to various comics, anime, video games, and tv shows including Guitar Hero, Star Trek, Johnny the Homicidal Maniac, Heroes, and the list goes on. Altogether, I’d have to say it was a pretty good book. A few of the stories near the mid-point got a bit tedious after reading several of the same nature in a row, and many of the quicker-paced ones are up near the front of the book, so you’ll get half through, and may even get bored. A lot of what entertained me about the book, as well, might go over the heads of someone who hasn’t lived the full of their life in popular geekdom, which is sad, because a majority of the book’s humor comes from the nerdy aspect of the stories more than anything else. For instance, if you don’t know what the ‘Alignment Chart’ is (because you haven’t either been on forums or 4chan enough), you miss out on a good third of a particular story. Without any knowledge of Jedi or Klingons, the first story, which is my personal favorite, will go right over your head, and you will likely fail to see the hilarious aspects of the story. So, my final say? If you’re a nerd, go ahead and have a good read. Trust me, you’ll enjoy it. If you’ve just started to find your way into the Labyrinth of geekdom, I recommend that you wait a year or so, or have Wiki open while you’re reading.
