He's always interesting to me. Autobiography, so WAY more interesting than any biographies I've ever read on him. He skips around a lot chronologically, but it's amazing how simply and humbly he talks about his music, where a biography would be hyping up his genious.

Love it! Want more of it NOW!
'In 1971, a group of young and enthusiastic yoga students came together in Bloomington, Indiana.'
I enjoyed this in the same way I did the documentary trekkies and strangely enough, I kind of want to go to a scrabble tournament to see if I can impress women with my 2-letter word skills. Check out scrabbulous.com...I got housed by a twelve year old last night who told me to "go back to the sandbox." even with a triple word score using quince. I need to work on my scrabble trash talk skills Boyz In The Hood style. "Domino mutha fucka!"

This was the first David Sedaris book I read....his essay on working as a Chrismas elf was our Christmastime story every XMas, but my mother would read it out loud to us, and there would be noticeable pauses, as she edited some of the X-rated sections. He is a brilliant man. With a brilliant life full of insane, meaningful stories to share. READ AND BUY ALL OF HIS BOOKS.

i was a bit underwhelmed by this book. i had high hopes that it would have a lot of good things to say about political/activist art and provide a scholarly and complete overview. it has nothing but good to say about the various relevant movements, and does provide a full overview (especially in historical terms), but still disappointed me. it's a bit too pedantic. Selz's choice to focus on California-based artists resulted in a severely limited idea of what has been done in this arena. there's also the plain fact that most political/activist art is all concept, no aesthetic. so what you get in this book is a huge list of half-baked activists who made lame attempts at social change by creating bad, ugly, or totally whack artwork. it also occasions the introduction of plenty of good work, don't get me wrong; but i'd been hoping for something more comprehensive in scope. i wanted this book to be more about the greater ideas behind some of the movements, and some of the bigger concepts to be expressed in the work. a lot of what Selz presents in this volume are small-time ideas -- the twitch-reflex work of politically-minded artists. art about political scandals, not about greater injustices. there's too much in his collection that is simply taking potshots at Reagan, Oliver North, Jesse Helms, George Bush. these petty one-shots make this a nice book that turns out to be primarily about petty one-shots. it's unfortunate. Selz shows that he knows his stuff; perhaps if the book didn't focus on the limited pool of California-based artwork it would be worth the effort.

I liked this book because the writer wrote about his own experiences and emotions, and that included a lot of fear, anger, and pain. It makes me feel like those experiences happened to living human beings, not "historical figures" or "nations." The events are sad, but because I don't have to live through them, they make me less sad.
