this is the best standard sci-fi book ever. if you want to get gutsy and dip into the genre, this is the book to do it. short, sweet, kids as major characters, and after reading this my step-mother taught it to her 9th grade honors class. HONORS CLASS!
No one does dystopia like Warren Ellis, is what I learned from this book. I'm letting volume one stand in for the whole series, at least for now...it's too many volumes for me to add them all! But suffice to say, I love this stuff. It's more self-consciously "in your face" and violent than I normally go for, but the writing is so damn clever, the world-building so complete and so fascinating, and the art so captivating that I cannot put these down when I pick them up. Just like Sandman is Neil Gaiman making a superhero of himself, Transmet is Warren Ellis making a superhero of himself...and that is just a lot of fun to watch.
Improbably fascinating. Seriously. This is one the best books I've read in the last ten years.

Perhaps deserving of another half star. Interesting, if fairly standard, world-building, but I tend to dislike books that split the focus between two characters in alternating chapters unless it's done really well. This one just isn't. I did like enough to try the next book in the series though - we'll see how it all progresses.

** spoiler alert ** In seventeenth century England, Anne Green, a servant in the house hold of Sir Thomas Read, gave birth to a premature and stillborn baby. That his grandson was the father of this child was likely what prompted Sir Read to have Anne Green prosecuted for the murder of an infant. This story would have ended with her hanging, had the execution been successful. But hours after this event (during which her father and brother hung on her legs to quicken her death), when laid out for dissection to train medical students, Anne Green fluttered her eyelids. That she survived her death is viewed as the divine providence of God in sparing the life of an innocent woman. Based on this true tale and told from both the point of view of a young medical student and Anne Green herself, this work of historical fiction is engaging and provides a window onto the disparity among social classes during the 1600s.

A fine historical fiction novel. It moves along at a decent pace. Although I like that is lacks the overwrought drama of a Ken Follett novel, I think it goes too far in the other direction and instead moments of suspense are released in an anti-climax. Also, I think the characters engage in activities - affairs, helping people escape the Nazis - without the reader really understanding why. Basically, I think there is a lack of character development - the characters are enjoyable if a bit two dimensional. I may be being overly critical because I think Furst's books can be so much better. He does avoid the traps many pop-fiction authors use. But he just doesn't quite go far enough with character development and plot to make them really good, deep, novels. By the way - the book ends in a way that either leaves some loose ends or else is setting up a sequel.

For fun and unusual teen romance, few people can beat the writing team of Rachel Cohn and David Levithan. They not only write heartwarming love stories, but write them in a fun and unique way.
