Having been young and living in Puerto Rico at the time, I don't think I fully grasped the racial connotations of this book when I read it, with regard to the history of slavery in the US and the South in particular. In retrospect, I vaguely recall that there did seem to be some kind of disturbing pro-KKK argument in the narrative, but what I remember most clearly of the book is, of course, Scarlett and Rhett's love story. I think the love story really appealed to my just-turned-teen self and I remember being so upset at the ending that I threw the book against the wall. I've never reread the book, though I probably should, but now that I'm older and hopefully wiser I realize that it's actually quite a perfect ending to the love story. I can't go into the societal aspects of the novel because I'm not too clear on them, having read the book so long ago.

not only was this an eye opening experience of mailer's writing, so far all my female friends that have read it have loved it as well, recommending it to their friends. who else could be living with a woman, cooking and cleaning for her, her children, his own children and write a book like this but norman mailer?

Ohmygosh! I wanted to hurtle this book across the room watch it crumple against the wall. I only kept reading out of some revolted fascination. This book represents everything I hate about pushing "learning to read." As if the story itself were not so insultingly boring and dumbed-down, the little blurb in the front about how to "teach" this book to a child (i.e., make your child repeat the repetitive words until they learn them...) made me ill. If I believed that this type of drivel were my reward for learning to read, I probably would never have bothered to learn!!! I know this is a total soap-box tirade, but few books have annoyed and dismayed me so much. Well-intentioned parents, please do NOT make your children suffer with a book like this. Instead, read them GOOD stories and let them develop a love of language and storytelling--the rest will follow!

Borrowed from public library. Adult fiction. I read The Maltese Falcon. It is a murder mystery, all after the valuable statue of the falcon. Not my style. Rough.

This cookbook has some really tasty recipes; they run the gamut from time consuming to easy, so depending on what you have time for, pick the recipe. Spicy chicken chili, burgundy beef, and gourmet Chinese chicken salad are a few of my favorites. PLUS, proceeds from the sale of this book benefits the Junior League of PDX, which serves the disabled, the elderly, women and children, the arts, historic preservation, and the environment... does banging around in the kitchen get any more noble than that?!

the girl's in Maia's class told her what to expect when she reached the Brazilian Jungle. 'There are huge mosquitoes which bite you. You turn as yellow as a lemon and then you die.' But maia, on orphan, can't wait to start the long sea voyage. She is to begin a new life with relatives she has never met, a thousand miles up the Amazon river. And maia's classmates could never, even in their wildest dreams, imagine the adventures that await her on the shores of the River sea. My Thoughts: i thought this book was a great read, full of friendships and courage. It had a very adventurous and exciting storyline which is vacuum packed into this book. The only negative for me was the at points the story was written in a childish way, but in most parts it was perfect!

One of the best reads ever, I never wanted the book to end. It was an exploration of human existence, a lesson of life, for me a path to maturity. Having read it was like being christened an adult.
