Irving spends a lot of time with objects in this novel--an armadillo, a dressmaker's dummy, a baseball. I loved young Owen Meany and young Johnny Wainwright. The grown-up John Wainwright seemed one-dimensional to me, whining about Reagan-era politics. And I usually like politics. Not really your typical Irving: no bears, no wrestling, no Circus stuff.

I LOVED this book - I'm ready to buy a house in Italy. Frances Mayes paints an amazing picture of a beautiful country and shares the challenges with purchasing and renovating a home abroad. Her recipes and the descriptions of the meals left my mouth watering and longing for farmer's market fresh vegetables and herbs.

Here is the book where I didn’t care about the age difference. Except that calling Frederica “my child” rubbed me the wrong way, but compared to the pleasure I got from reading this book, it was an infinitesimal annoyance. What gave me the most pleasure is the writing itself – not the plot or the characters. An unexpected turn of phrase, witty dialogue, clear-cut detail – or the whole scene – and I was laughing out of happiness. Right now my favourite is the description of not-happened wedding of Endymion and Charis, as told by Charles Trevor. It is just … wow. So lively and hilarious.

I skipped through a lot. The story was compelling but some sections seemed to wander into areas that weren't very compelling or related well to the narrative. I think the author loved the husband much more than her character and I wasn't sure the epilogue made sense with that in mind.

One of the first romance books that I enjoyed as a kid. A very sweet, ridiculously wholesome story about a strong female protagonist who grows up in the wilderness with her family, which is a nice change from the ol' "beautiful, talented, spirited, and witty character who grows up among wealth and splendor, yet remains unhappy due to her sheltered upbringing and societal restriction, gender roles, etc."
