The Namesake by Jhumpa Lahiri I have an Indian friend who told me that when he read this book that he “had to stop at moments because I so overwhelmed. It was so true; it just hit me.” I can appreciate the sentiment. I too am the son of an immigrant and my wife is an immigrant. I think for anybody who is “first generation American” this book will stand as a testament to those experiences. There is an inherent conflict present in one's immigrant parents. They left their home for a reason, generally, that reason is that their home sucked. But no matter how much one's home sucks the memories of childhood will always possess innocence and nostalgia. The act of moving itself is displacing. It makes one become the 'other' to the natives. One's home takes on a element of foreignness. Once those immigrants breed, the kids and parents possess for each other that 'otherness.' The kids think their parents are in effect 'backwards' and 'stupid' and the parents feel that their kids are rejecting their culture and are far too concerned about movie stars and handbags. The Namesake is the story of these inherent immigrant conflicts. It is the story of an Indian family who decide to immigrant to the United States in the sixties to make a better life for the family. They succeed and rapidly climb the social ladder. Once they have children their home becomes a hotbed of conflict and irrupts in the protagonist's (the son's) rejection of his name and with it his heritage. He decides to become American, and spends the latter half of the booking attempting to define what, in fact, that means. All in all I would say that The Namesake is a very typical story without any major surprises. It portrays a family, their conflict, and ultimately their triumph, which is of course is accomplished through love. Although there is nothing unexpected, it is very well executed. As a reader, I was interested the whole way through, mostly on account that it is accurate, the characters are interesting, and the writing is good. I will remember it as being good and worth reading but I won't remember it as exceptional. There is one stylistic element I feel I must comment upon. Jhumpa Lahiri writes with distance. When I started the book I was slightly taken back and thought it similar to styling of the 19th century pre-moderns. There is very little dialogue. It is very much a story told by a narrator and the narrator attempts to be impartial. This style lessens the penetrating emotional drama one might expect with such conflicts. It makes the writing chilled (but not quite cold).
