When I read this book, I'd heard such amazing reviews from all kinds of adults I knew. And I guess if I hadn't read a million fantasy books as a kid, I might have thought this one was special. But I just felt like an adult reading a children's book, which is fine if that's the objective and that's what my expectations were. But I just didn't love it the way I was supposed to.

Temple Grandin does a fantastic job of combining multiple disciplines into an accessible work. Worth reading for anyone who deals with people or animals on a daily basis.

Helpful in learning. Just haven't had time to use it as much as I would like. Not as geared towards those who have a basic understanding or knowledge of the language though.
a little dry, but good for social workers, teachers, doctors, etc. to read

I picked this book up off of the new books shelf at the library this afternoon and am very glad that I did. I found it fascinating. It spoke to the chemical engineer in me as well as to the literature and art lover. More than a hundred of the most creative and original minds of our time were asked to imagine if the whole of life were reducible to a single formula and provide an answer. The answers range from the mathematical to the outrageous. Some of my favorites include Tim Etchells: two people + talking + occasional silence x time spent walking together = solutions/problems and Cao Fei's pleasing formula. Abbie Hoffman provided the molecular structure of LSD and Hans-Peter Feldman a recipe for marzipan. A very thought provoking book. Browsing through it was a wonderful way to spend a rainy afternoon. I am amazed by the different ways there are too look at the world and am trying to decide what my answer would be.

I knew a little of Thomas Beatie's story from the crazy media storm that surrounded him when he was pregnant, but it was good to read about his life from his own point of view. He and his wife are obviously madly, insanely in love with each other and with their little daughter, plus they both had extremely difficult lives before finding each other. What a happy ending, and what a blessed little girl to have parents like them.

I liked the premise of this book, and it was an enjoyable read. I don't think I need to recap the entire book, that's already been done. The one things that I really found missing from the book was some sense of the interplay between the various chapters. On their own, each chapter does a very good job of showing how an individual circumstance would change if humans disappeared. But, there is very little about how the massive fires and explosions from the petrochemical plants in Texas would affect the way that nature reclaims New York. Surely a nuclear reactor melting down would have a massive influence on New England forests. The sci-fi component was a bit reaching, and seemed to move beyond the main idea of the book. The preservation of humanity seems to run counter to a world without humans. Either way, it was an entertaining, and at times frightening read.

The book that orginally drove me into my current state of baseball madness. I'm not sure if this is the greatest baseball book ever written, but if I was trapped on an island and could only bring one belonging... this is it.
