Someone in the Supernatural Fiction Readers Group recommended this as an early vampire novel. It was, in fact, published 25 years before Dracula. I read it through Project Gutenberg but I would estimate it at 80 pages - a short novel. The recommender thought the language might be too archaic and inaccessible for today's reader, but I didn't have too much of an issue with it. Dracula, to me, was much more difficult to read. There are some spoilers below. I imagine, when this was first published, that it was a shocking story, and readers would race to the end to discover what was preying on young girls. It felt a little obvious to me that Carmilla was a vampire based on the symptoms. The archaic emotions of the narrator, Laura, however, gave the story a gothic mood and although she had little to do with the destruction of the vampire, I thought it was interesting to have the novel narrated by the victim (as opposed to Dracula, where you never hear from the victims). Some of the "vampire rules" given at the end were interesting as well, although there were many supernatural happenings not explained at all - the appearance of the cat (the vampire's familiar, or a form taken by the vampire?), and how the vampire appears while feeding as an indistinct black shape - and I also wondered, why did Carmilla/Millarca/Mircalla need to procure living arrangements with strangers when she actually slept in her grave? Despite my questions, I think this is an interesting little book that any vampire fan would enjoy.

i learned that as an immigrant from a foreign land, if i ever commit a specific intent crime, i can raise a cultural defense to negate the requisite mens rea.

I kept hearing about this book, and I've read a lot of post-apocalyptic books. I didn't notice until the end that both main characters - the son and father - never have names. But it doesn't really matter as they struggle to survive. (I have to wonder, what happens when the canned food disappears?) This is really a stark book - dialogue, setting, etc.

This was the most horrifically bad novella I have read in my whole life. It was like a 3rd grader decided to pepper the word fuck in a creative writing essay every few words. I like how Virginia is from an Italian orphanage. Virginia is totally an Italian name.. or not lol.

The historical facts of this book are compelling, but apart from a 30-page run, the book seems to be lacking any sort of driving force behind the narrative.

I am truly blessed to have had this man as my professor in college. It was teachers like him that inspired me to become one. His passion for literature and history carried him to the far reaches of Earth to find the one and only orginial "Dracul" - the origin of Stoker's novel. His novel was the basis for Coppola's 1992 movie. Vampires do exist!! Do not believe those that will tell you otherwise-they are weak and ignorant!

I love Jane's books. I have re-read Pride and Prejudice many times.
