I like fantasy, but a lot of series I can't get into. I will read the next book in this series which says a lot. I thought it was enjoyable and not too young.

The book is fascinating! I love Bill (of course if I picture in my mind that is the gorgeous Bill Compton in HBO TV Series) and Sookie. Ms. Harris, WHEN ARE YOU GOING TO REDEEM BILL'S CHARACTER? PLEASE, I think his character is stronger than that of Eric-I perceive Eric uses his authority to really pursue Sookie. But Bill has this HUMAN CHARACTER to mend for the mistakes that he did...In this book together with the rest of the previous books (and the TV series), I learned that in the end Sookie needs to decide to find her true love - she can only find this with Bill...because he is strong in character.he was willing to risk his own life for her. I rated this book 4 stars with the hope that Ms. Harris will redeem Bill''s character on her proceeding books (you mentioned that ...Bill plays no small part...so would this mean Bill has the major parts in the story-winning and ending up with Sookie happily ever after). - that he will shine as Sookie's hero..after all the plot he is her first love... Hope that the next book will allow Bill's character to shine...why Sookie deserves him after all his failures...With Eric, I see him as an authoritative vampire who is jealous with whom Bill has - Sookie (from the beginning)...it seems Eric wants what Bill wants...

On the surface, "Emily Ever After" seemed to be another tale of good girl gone bad in NYC. Fortunately, it turned out to be individual and completely different from any of the tales of New York I have read before. Emily struggles to fit in with the other assistants at work, and finds herself in places she'd never imagined she could ever be. She got laughed at when she ordered a Diet Coke on a night out, and tried to counter that by drinking too much at a book party, resulting in her first-ever hangover. After that incident she learned her limit, but was taken by surprise with her new 'is-he-isn't-he' boyfriend. While he claimed to be a good Christian, and even took Emily to church with him, his wandering hands and his far too provocative lips left Emily feeling really confused. After she allowed Bennett to get closer than she was comfortable with, I thought she'd have just conformed to be the kind of girl she surrounded herself with. It was great seeing her make decisions that she felt would make her comfortable, and have to deal with things that real-life Christians deal with while living in a fast-paced world. I really enjoyed the writing style, and loved Emily's passion and determination. The side-story of her uncle seemed a bit out of place and unnecessary, though her uncle did offer her a bit of home away from home. I DIDN'T like that this book made San Diego seem like small-town life. Though it is considerably different from NYC, San Diego would have offered Emily the same kinds of people (girls who are fashion obsessed and boys who want lots of sex) and life-experiences (publishing companies, party life, drinking, drugs, sex, etc). If Emily truly went to SDSU she would have been just as immersed in that lifestyle as she was in NYC. All in all, this was a really enjoyable book and I liked it far more than I anticipated I would. I am now adding more Dayton/Vanderbilt books to my reading list. :-)

Clever structure and subtle psychology, not for everyone, but better than most books dealing with the Holocaust.

This is one of my favorite books of all time. I've read it as at least five times over the years, though that may be a miscount. This book is a treasure as something new comes through every time I read it.

This well documented book on Hadrian paints the picture of a Renaissance man before his time. Hadrian was an architect, solder, poet and recreational traveler among many other pursuits. The book would be a challenging introduction to Roman history but flows well and contains many stories about Hadrian's political and personal life. The author relies heavily on documentation other than Hadrian's personal memoirs and takes some license to fill in events from sources that don't mention Hadrian by name but do suggest what Hadrian might have done and seen during his reign. Hadrian is a likable character that I could imagine talking with in a bar but I'd have to ask him how he really felt about irradicating every Jew from Jerusalem and killing those Senators to secure his power. Oh yes, I'd also have to ask him if he killed is homosexual teen lover.
