Really liked her style--enjoyable to read and made a lot of sense.

I bought this book for a class in college, & have held onto it since then. It's very well organized, clear, and thorough; it is also compact & easy to carry on any hikes or bird-watching trips I go on. I'd recommend it for anyone interested in birding, from beginners looking at birds in the yard to experienced bird-watchers who want a reference book to take on trips or counts.

I enjoyed it- the stories of the maids really pulled me in and I couldn't put it down. My grandfather grew up in Mississippi in the 40's/50's and from what I know about him and what his belief system is (he is a real piece of work of the dickhead variety), I think the author's depiction of the white people and the way society worked back then rings true. But I am an outsider in many ways so how authentic or real the book was, I don't know (so many reviews harp on this). I also wasn't reading this expecting to have my mind blown- it is not classic literature- but it really was an enjoyable read- cover to cover.
Eclipse was better than the 1st two books because stuff happened and took the focus away from Bella. And good, mystical, weird stuff happened, don't want to spoil it for anyone. Think this will be a good lead in to the 4th book.

Stephen Baxter is a prolific author, and it shows in a number of his works - they are very Clarkian, taking an interesting idea (in this case a vast planet drowning flood) and following it to it's conclusion. As with many of his books the typical cast of scientists are generally unreflective and fail to present a plausible inner life in response to what is going on around them. Undoubtedly, as with Clarke, this is because Baxter is more interested in pursuing his idea to it's conclusion, rather than the the inner life of his characters. This is not atypical of SF in general, but it's particularly marked in Baxter's work because often, as in this book, the central theme is a terrifying extinction event where we once again see the last few humans struggling to survive. This makes their general lack of reflection seem even more psychopathic than in less extreme works. Aside from these flaws it's reasonably compelling and has a sort of gruesome inevitability about it which is quite satisfying.
You pretty much know what you're getting from an Agatha Christie novel: A dozen or so people more or less sequestered, with one or more among them a murderer. Narrative thrills, excellent psychology, and a few larger-than-life characters. As the last Hercule Poirot mystery, Curtain does not disappoint, providing an unusual spin on the investigation process, some darker situations than normal for Christie, and even some social commentary. This is a particularly good book to return to Agatha Christie with if you've gotten tired of her usual tricks. Many of her devices are still present, but the book still has a worthwhile uniqueness to it.
