I am amazed how well this book captures the dark side of human nature, the one that tears the very fabric of society apart, when left unchecked and unconditioned.

norah vincent spent a year dressing, acting, and being accepted as a man and infiltrated working class bowling clubs, a monastery, the NY dating scene, and working as a door-to-door salesman. this book gives an interesting look at what it's like living as a man (something most girls are never able to directly experience).

I really enjoyed some aspects of this book and others were difficult for me to get through. The cultural experience of reading A Thousand Splendid Suns was wonderful. It is so very healthy to connect to characters of a different culture and to experience the hardships that they endure. I have a much greater appreciation for the "normal" people of the middle east and all they live through and for. It is a beautiful story of life and love in a world of war and terror. Hosseini captures your heart through the characters and their stories, while also giving you a taste of reality in the middle east.

I'm so very glad that something has displaced Harry Potter as the book most recommended by my friends. I've never read any Jane Austen, which simultaneously shocks most of the people I hang out with, and I think makes them think less of me as a person, so maybe over break...

What can I say? I love Bill Bryson. I read the bit about Sir Isaac Newton to every single person that I encountered one day. He really knows how to find the humor in things.

This book taught me to think about writing and myself in a completely new way. Usually books are set up with some obviously good/bad characters-- or you're at least set up to sympathize more with one than another. In this book, however, Kundera is so refreshingly non-judgemental. He writes each character deeply--so that each one is like a world unto him/herself--and successfully zooms out the readers focus at the same time, so that you're able to see how they all relate, at the same time that you understand each one so well. The structure is also so original-- following themes over chronology or plot. Finally-- the writing itself is beautiful and also original. I felt like there were no games in this book. It was authentic writing and thinking.
