***1/2 Writers Roger Zelazny, Gerald Hausman fictionalize the heroic survival stories of two famous Mountain Men, John Colter & Hugh Glass. Hausman embellishes Colter's already fantastic story of being the naked prey of a band of 100 Blackfeet, running, hiking & hiding for eleven days until he reaches a frontier fort. Some of Hausman's additions are a bit ridiculous, but the over-all presentation is a fine adventure. Zelazny has the more difficult job, because Glass was mauled by a bear, was left for dead by his friends, and then had to CRAWL, alone in the wilderness, more than 200 miles to Fort Kiowa; therefore, much of Glass's action is slow crawling, which could make for SLOW READING. Zelazny buffers the slow crawl with flashbacks, memories and hallucinations. The dreamy quality often seems jarring when juxtaposed with the fast-moving Colter story (I should mention that the chapters of WILDERNESS alternate between the Colter & Glass stories). This is not a negative criticism, though; I actually liked reading these differently paced biographies placed side-by-side.

Though Margaret Atwood wrote this book in the 1970s, it still remains very relevant, almost scarily so, to today's society. Perhaps everyone who reads will get something different out of this book, but what I got out of the book was a message to our society about what extremism can do and where it can lead us. The book was sometimes frightening as I saw parallels in today's society to what eventually happened in the book; maybe that was its intent. No matter if you think what is happening today is right or wrong, I believe this book is a great read. It keeps you involved and it keeps you guessing, theorizing, wondering and thinking. And the latter is the most important thing I got from this book.

I’ll write a critical review – At least that’s what I’m thinking – ’Cause this book’s tone was much too dry As was the purple inking. It did discuss some critical Ideas, such as how Our instincts sway our reasoning – I’m thinking on this now. But still, the book’s critical mass Consists of lists and charts. What were the authors thinking? Did they learn rhetorical arts? Critical thinking, in this book, Means, “Just follow these rules So you can be more like your profs And less like average fools.” Of course, my learned friends are right. They just seem a bit uptight.

Love James Patterson and liked this book because it was an easy read while on vacation. But if you are looking for anything more than an easy read, this isnt that book.

Very good light read, with some layers of deep significance. I loved the approach that Valentine and Peter take to change the world through words and culture. The back of the book basically gives away the ending, but I found that I was so entrenched in the story, that when I got to that part in the book, I was still caught completely off guard.

I started to read this book and realized that this genre is not my cup of tea. I didn't even get past the first chapter and donated it. It fall in line with Lord of the Rings and other similar books for which I prefer to just watch the movie.

The first time I read this book back in Frosh HS English I hated it, couldn't have cared less and found it tedious. My mother and sister breathing down my neck sharing their strong feelings for the book ("the best ever") did not help. Now, 10 years later, I did in fact love this book. Great characters, facinating historic setting, luv, and of course mass murder.
The slowness of this book reminds me of the slowness of life in early adulthood prior to landmark events to lend relative emotional velocity to one's experience. I'm sure this was in large part because the main character was numbed by her addiction, but i was left with a wistful feeling that this character might never experience the relativity of life.
