This is the Bible as far as Ramsey Theory on the Integers goes. (No graph-theoretic Ramsey Theory--just integer stuff.) It contains a great discussion of van der Waerden numbers, Schur's theorem, and Rado's work on linear systems.

This was a long haul for me. I loved the language more often than the plot or characters. One gets the feeling that Updike is creating present tense canvases that move from one color to another, as opposed from a subject's start to finish. The characters are informed by these descriptions, but the words do not lend themselves to prepping the characters for whole-hearted involvement in the plot. Progressing through this book is best done in snippets so focus can be given to the mood of objects, body parts, and certain transitional pay-offs. I felt the words were beautiful, but did not inspire me to carry my thinking too much further. I doubt I will give this a second read, but have pulled quotes that are decorative, beautiful, and at times, profound.

A positive little fable and it is a good gift for friends who have a more spiritual aspect and buy into the whole 'life is a journey' thing.

I am a fan of Alice Hoffman. But I have to say I was a bit disappointed in this book. I enjoyed many parts but I as soon as I was getting attached to a character they were gone. I would have enjoyed staying in just a few eras and see the story fleshed out a bit more.

Reading this book was like going through the first three decades of my life again. I had been meaning to read some of Saul Bellow's work for years - what with him being a Nobel laureate and all. Someone gave me this book years ago. I would pick it up and put it down without ever getting past the first 30 pages or so. I began to think this was a sign - that I did not like the book. However, in a brave move, I chose it for our book club. I have lost a few friends but gained great pleasure from reading this book all the way through. Now, the comment about my life and this book - what did it mean? Well, the first hundred or so pages were a real struggle; enough to shake my faith in myself and wonder if this was really worth it. All the references to Russian and Northern European philosophers and my complete lack of knowledge of any of these schools of thought were enough to make me feel stupid (the first one and half decades or so of my life). Towards the middle of the book, things started to change; the characters seemed just a bit more real, the train of thought started to make sense. I felt if I could stick with it, there would be a great future ahead. The last quarter of the book was near about unputdownable. The ruminations on the nature of love, life, relationships and family were at once real and engrossing. For most part, ruminations tend to be a lot more enjoyable for the cow doing the ruminating than for any observer. However, Saul Bellow's are worth reading. They are smart, erudite and witty. The end left me feeling about the book as I do about the last decade or so of my life - purposeful, content, cheery and as though I had learned something valuable. I would highly recommend this book to anyone looking for a good, long conversation with a very intelligent, wise old man.

This book was fun science fiction. I like how it took place in Arizona and her descriptions of the desert. I thought it was innovative and interesting.

Hard to relate to this "dated" writing style.
