Dark and dystopic. Huxley makes a point and then finds 50 ways to hammer it home. The penultimate section (religion and free-will) induced much contemplation - that part was particularly worthwhile.

Great book to get a different perspective on the Pacific theater war.

Another pickup from a second hand book store. If you like a good mystry as well as learning some history along the way, you can't go wrong.

Great writing and captivating main character. I couldn't believe it translated from the author's native Russian so well.

I thought Better: A Surgeon's Notes on Performance was, well, better. It probably suffered from feeling like I'd read half of it before in the New Yorker. But still interesting and lucidly written.

A modern British writer. The book was long and at times I wasn't sure where it was going. There were parts I didn't enjoy reading. I suspect the author was trying to portray life for a teen who is confused about their idenity. The ending was a bit of a downer considering I spent a lot of time reading it. I am glad I finished the book because I am now able to have an opinion on a book which had quite a buzz behind it.

This book probably wasn't quite what I had expected and the writing style/approach reminded me very much of Bill Bryson (dry humour, commenting on odd facts and people's weird habits) but it was still interesting enough to hold my attention. Tim Ecott's life was characterised by his dad's career in the British army and most of his early years had been spent abroad. In his teenage years, his family emigrated to South Africa and from then on his life continued to be divided by time spent in South Africa and time back at home in Northern Ireland. The book gives you an unusual perspective, i.e. a tale of a Irish/British family emigrating to South Africa in the late 1970s and their steady decline into poverty. It's written with much dry humour and wit, discussing the social climate in Jo'burg's suburb Hillbrow in the 1970s and 80s. I suspect that some people might consider "Stealing Water" to be a shallow account of life in SA (Ecott only passingly touches upon the wider social and political issues) but I don't think that was his aim anyway. More a family history and a memoir about, what Ecott considered, his secret, and perhaps shameful, life in Africa.

This was an interesting book; however, I should have stopped reading after a few chapters....very repetitive

Special Topics in Calamity Physics is the first novel by Marisha Pessl, and was voted Top 5 works of fiction by the New York Times. A summary of this book is a little like fitting an entire wardrobe into a carry on but I'll give it a whirl: A nomadic Rory Gilmore finds herself sleuthing after her teacher's murderer. It's chockfull of literary and historical references - mostly in a witty way. The main character, Blue, is very easy to relate to, but just like me and Gilmore Girls, a little goes a long way. There's a reason tv stations don't do marathons of GG. I put this book down several times because it was having a little too much fun with its playful verbiage and not sticking to the plot. Still, it was a fun read - mostly because I was trying to figure out which footnotes were real and which were fabricated. which reminds me, i need to figure out if there really is a website called girlrevolooshun.

This one had been on my "to read" list for a while, and it was very good! A murder at a circus begins this tale of a 90-something year old Jacob Jankowski. He is now in a nursing home and dealing with aging. He remembers back to how he ran off and joined a travelling circus after his parent's death. Great characters and story.
