So interesting to read erotica from a female perspective, and written so elequently.
Not my favorite or as expected.

Hurston's fanciful retelling of the Biblical story of Moses is puzzling to many readers but I really enjoyed it. If you like anything else she's written, you'll enjoy this as well.

Ellie was asked by her parents to go and check on her Aunt Bertie in Idaho, but she has just gotten the ideal internship at a news station and doesn't want to miss out on this once in a life time opportunity. She flies to Idaho with the thought of checking to see if her aunt is able to stay living in her home unassisted or if her parent are correct in thinking that she needs to be moved to a nursing home. When she arrives she finds a christmas tree with presents under the tree in May. Her aunt explains that she wants to celebrate Christ's birth all year long. Ellie accepts this as a sweet thought but determines to hide the idea from her parents. Her aunt also has picked out a husband for her in the divorced doctor and through the rumor mill in this small town they don't have a chance. Is her aunt senile like everyone thinks or is something else going on?

A very enjoyable novel about an elderly widower who begins a friendship with a local shopkeeper, a widow who happens to be Pakistani. Then a drama enfolds them with their family and two old guns. I really loved it.

This book follows a woman in 19th century China through a lifetime of oppressive traditions. Women used their own secret writing system and sworn sisterhoods to stay connected despite their limited mobility. They were kept in the upper rooms, with travel only allowed when accompanied and hidden in a palanquin, and even then, only at festivals to visit their families. Their bound feet also severely limited their range. I found myself frustrated by the women's adherence to the oppression, but I suppose that is what happens in every culture. Most go along with the status quo, and few are brave enough to fight it. I felt the book was a little slow at times. The physical relationship between Lily and Snow Flower was confusing. Snow Flower was a very physical character. Their relationship did speak to me about the importance of a good friend and how devastating misunderstandings and competition can be.

The Black Book was for me, the most exciting book I had ever read at the time. I carried it in my schoolbag, and would secretly show it to school mates. My compositions on 'What I did during my summer holidays' were liberally sprinkled with Durrellesque styles, lines and, where I could get away with it, acts. Highly recommended to callow youth and nostalgic men.

I gave this 5 stars for being the scariest book I ever read. Really creepy and stayed with me for a long time afterward. Maybe a bit too long and rambling in places, but did I mention how scary it was?

Mid 3. This novel captures the paranoia and psychological manipulation which characterise the rule of a totalitarian regime, as Kadare provides a damning portrait of his country's oppression under 'the Guide', a fictionalised portrait of Albanian dictator, Enver Hoxha. The author weaves a plot centered on the mystery surrounding the apparent suicide of the designated successor to the regime - a plot based on real life events. The story of whether this was an opportune suicide or politically motivated murder is related from the perspectives of multiple narrators, and is an engaging and, overall, well-crafted read. However, it does falter in pace and style at times, while the ending lacks resonance.
