I loved this book. I liked the format of learning about the characters via letters. These kind of down home, feel good books are great. Plus I feel like I learned about the Channel Islands during WWII. I had no idea of the situation there. Great book!

A classic love story. It will probably always be one of my favorite books. It is hard to get into the old English at first, but once you get the hang of it its not so bad. The story is a great example of the old saying "don't judge a book by its cover"

I have a lot of feelings about this book. On one hand, I enjoyed how he twisted a long form medium (the novel) into a mosaic of short stories. On the other hand, I don't think he had the ability as a writer to do a book-length straight narrative if he wanted to. Calvino is totally and wholly a short story writer. That said, I really like his short stories, and he did a lot to make up for the fact that this book was a collection of basically 20 shorts with a tenuous attempt at maintaining a non self-reflexive thread through all of them. What I love most about this book is the meditation on what it means to love reading. Right from the book store all the way to a wacky far-fetched fantasy about being prized by the state as one who loves reading, Calvino explores this feeling in so many beautiful ways. What he lacks in ability to write long form he makes up for in knowing how to craft stories with the same slope of growing excitement and involvement. It almost makes you wonder if each of the 10 aborted stories in the book were actually 10 real attemps by Calvino to write long fiction. Each story is a new approach in a different setting and genre and Calvino succeeds in getting you invested in each of them. Had the non-short story aspects of this book been more grounded in reality I think the thread through the entire book would have been more believable. But let's face it, Calvinos stories never end in a non-fantastic way even if they actually begin with people instead of thoughtful paramecia. I liked this book for the variety of flavors of writing. But overall it was more of a merry go round than something whose sum was greater than it's parts.

Too cute! Three little chicks, Penny, Polly, and Molly, aren't your typical chicks. Instead of being cute and quiet, they like to shake things up. They especially like to look under the farmer's tractor hood. The older hens want to teach them to be nice chicks, but the little chicks have too much fun swinging on cow's tails and roping roosters. It's not until the farmer's tractor won't start up and the chicks fix it, that the farm realizes it's good to have these tough chicks around.

This is by far one of the best missionary biographies I've ever read. Darlene tells her story in a quiet, humble way that captures you and never lets you go. She never gives details of the tortures she went through while in the Japanese prison, just of the times she weeps and tells God she can't go through that again--and yet He gave her the strength she needed each time. She doesn't sugar coat the times she despaired, but God's hand is shown mightily each time. I had the privilege of watching her tell this story on video. The book sounds exactly like her. I wept many times while watching her tell her story, and I wept just as many times reading this book. A touching, convicting, awe-inspiring story of a woman who gave all for God. I cannot recommend this highly enough!

** spoiler alert ** This book was horribly sad but wonderfully good. Edward leaving Bella in story was depressing, but we got to learn more about Jacob. I may not be a big werewolf fan, but it was extreamly interesting. And it tied up a few loose ends in the book. Like, for one, how they KNEW the lengend of 'The Cold Ones'. This story was cute and had fluff and had a twisted end to it.

If you're looking for great literature then search elsewhere. Charlaine Harris writes like a romance novel but that is the appeal of this series. If you just want to be entertained - this is for you.

The illustrations in this book are fantastic. I love the message of slowing down, smelling the flowers, and being your own individual. Ferdinand is a great read for kids who worry about fitting in.
