Temple Grandin is a highly functional autistic author who brings you in to her head as she help us understand her understanding of animals and of humans. In particular, I like the section on fear and anxiety. They are very different in animals and serve very different purposes. This is not to be taken as a animal training book. It is about how we as humans form an understanding about animals and about each other.

Excellent treatment of the first three years of the Iraq War. Many of the missteps and fallacies of the (mainly) American war effort have been well explored in a number of places, but Fiasco remains the best and most comprehensive to date. Ricks calls on a variety of excellent primary sources and interviews and, on balance, presents a fair assessment of the run up and execution of the war and resultant insurgency. The course that the war took was not unpredictable. There were many people, importantly many in the military, who warned early on that going into Iraq would not be all kisses and roses. Weapons inspectors, right up until the bombs started to fall, argued that there in fact was probably no ongoing WMD program and Richard Clarke, among others, pointed out that there was little connection between radical Islamic terrorism and the ba’athists in Iraq. The main point to the book, though, is not that the Iraq War should never have happened. It is that if a nation commits to something so important, it must give thought to the strategy and rational from the start, base its decisions on good information, pay attention to history, and adapt to the changing environment. Looking forward to now reading the follow-up volume The Gamble.

I really loved this book. Interesting topic (how black maids were treated by their white employers in the 1960'2), wonderful story, great themes- what's really important to children, the need to be brave and take chances, friendship, the importance of honesty-both to others and to oneself. Loved it! December 2010: I'm listening to The Help because a friend told me the 3 readers of the story were awesome and she was right-a delight to listen to. EXCELLENT audiobook-hard to "put down".

I'm reading lots of holocaust stuff right now since my middle schooler is studying it. I thought this was OK but the main character was way more naive than possible. It is described as a fable and when I read it as such it fits better.

Laymon's characters and plots are usually (well, always) ridiculous. Come Out Tonight beats ridiculous to a pulp and then dances on its grave. You know the kid in Friday 13th who says, "I'll just go and check the wood shed (in the dark, on my own)"? Well, the characters in Come Out Tonight make him look like Einstein. Utterly preposterous. But after all, it's Laymon so what can we expect? In a scholarly mood, I may have given 1 star. With a belly full of Jack Daniels and lungs full of the finest hashish I may have given 5 stars. As a sober dumbass, 3 will have to do.

The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer is a startling tale that's filled with mystery, intrigue and quite a bit of quirkiness. But I wasn't blown away like I expected to be. To me The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer is a good book, but one that just didn't live up to all the hype. I know many, many people love this book, so don't hate me when I say that it just wasn't my favorite book. The thing that irked me the most was the plot, it was also my favorite part of the book. The plot is fast-paced and addicting. It was filled with so many twists and turns that I could hardly wrap my head around them all. But there was just so much craziness and so much random stuff. Somethings just rubbed me the wrong way. Mara was definitely a character I could sympathize with. She'd gone through so much and just the thought that she was still standing amazed me. Mara was definitely a plus to the story. But Noah, dear Noah sort of creeped me out. He was one interesting character, and that's all I'm going to say. I guess I just didn't fall for his charms. He and Mara did have a nice romance, though. The ending blew me away. The cliffhanger is so major that it literally redefines cliffhangers. I'd be lying if I said I wasn't excited for the next one, no matter how weird it is. Even though I didn't love this one as much as others it was still a good read that definitely managed to surprise and enchant me. Rating: 3-4 stars. Vague, I know.
