This is the counterpoint to the male brain. Both books distill complex biology into very easy to comprehend ideas about what makes a female or male..well, female or male.

I almost didn't finish this book - it was definitely heading towards 1-star territory. The first half drags on and on with long overly-detailed scenes that don't further the plot at all. They slap you across the face with foreshadowing (for events that don't happen for another 100 pages) done in a completely un-subtle way that just spoils itself. The whole thing could have been condensed to a quarter of the length. Then around page 250 - boom, it's like the book was handed over to a different author. The plot picks up, it jumps back and forth through time, new characters are introduced, and it becomes hard to put down. If only the first 250 pages were as interesting as the last 100!

Fatsis's account of entering the world of competitive Scrabble is infinitely entertaining. I enjoyed it so much that it inspired me to buy a CD-Rom version of Scrabble and I now stay up until 2 a.m. most nights playing it. Hmmm, maybe reading Word Freak wasn't the best thing...

I was actually laughing out loud as I read the first few chapters of this book. Although there are a few chapters towards the end that I didn't enjoy as much, the book provides a very entertaining experience overall.

An examination of truth/authenticity in Las Vegas - eh. Throw in "virtual reality" and an identity game on top of Vegas - trying too hard.
My favorite Buechner book. I am not a big fan of stories that flesh out Bible stories but this one made me laugh and cry- both are hard to do.

Ik vond de schaduw van de wind helemaal geweldig. Ik las het in twee of drie dagen uit. Het wat trage verloop aan het begin wordt meer dan goed gemaakt door de snelle opeenvolging van de gebeurtenissen later in het verhaal.
The concept for the novel was great, but I think it could have been executed much better, and I was not a fan of the ending.

This was an entertaining and short story about John Harrison and is obsessive development of four marine clocks capable of enabling trans-oceanic navigation. Source material on Harrison is slim and so is this volume. Only a superficial treatment of the technologies of the clocks is given (otherwise the book would bog down and suffer readability.) I would have appreciated more photos of the clocks, but perhaps this was a failing only of the paperback? The only images of the clocks are shown very small in the front cover. A good read.
