Salubrious. Pugnacious. Ossified. Juddering. These are not words that I am using to describe China Mieville's writing, but words that China Mieville uses to describe, well, everything. The most irritating part of his otherwise excellent Perdido Street Station is still very much in play in The Scar - that is, Mieville is still kinda unsure of himself, he still feels the need to prove himself, and his method of choice is Big Long Vocabulary Words. The problem is that he latches onto one, and then uses it again and again, sometimes in slightly questionable context. As a result, it can feel like he opened a dictionary at random, found the most obscure word on the page, and then dropped it into his narrative wherever it could possibly fit. Anyway it's not the best-written book I've ever read. It does, however, come close to being one of the most imaginative - even more so than Perdido Street Station, I think. This is why almost all of the critical reviews that get quoted on China Mieville dust jackets praise his creativity, imagination, inventiveness, etc, almost to the exclusion of any mention of how he writes. In his defense, he seems to be getting better as he goes. The Scar is more self-assured than Perdido Street Station, has fewer cringe-moments, is constructed with much greater artistry. And it unfolds the world of Bas-Lag into a much wider, more bizarre arena than we would previously have guessed. All in all, it's a fantastic story in a fantastic setting, supported by medium-strength writing, and I am okay with that.
