I didn't like first person point of view to start with. moreover if it was in some romance fiction adventure fantasy (I didn't really get the main genre of this book). I gave this book a try since it dealt with Japanese history and I wished to gain some interesting information about the country in this book. but for me... the story was boring. I had to wait for almost forever to read something really happening (at last). page-hopping couldn't be avoided. but it had interesting character like Lord Shigeru and a decent tragedy too. so, I thought this book was okay at some level.

Using just his left eye to signal letters, this author -- the victim of a debilitating stroke -- was able to compose an insightful commentary on how it feels to have an active mind trapped in a useless body. An amazing struggle.

I have both read this book and saw the movie of it. I still dont quiet get the story. And what the writer wants to tell us. But its an ok book. Not a book that i would recommend to readers that likes to read easy away. This is literature. A book about a rich guy who parties. A green light on a small dock. The early 30's before the great depression.

Jeannine Garsee tackles the difficult subjects of homosexuality, homophobia, and family loyalty in SAY THE WORD. In particular, I found the family loyalty issue most striking. It’s incredibly difficult for an author to create a despicable character who we want to beat the crap out of, yet still empathize and understand where he’s coming from. Mr. Gallagher, and, to a lesser extent, Shawna, are two such characters. They’re flawed, sometimes with unadmirable points of view or attitudes, and yet you can’t help but feel for them, can’t help but understand where they’re coming from, even as you wish for them to grow up. I feel like the issue of homophobia could have been discussed more in-depth, and I certainly wasn’t satisfied with the blasé way in which Shawna’s sex life was treated. The characters of Shawna, her dad, Schmule, and even Shawna’s friend LeeLee were well developed, but something was missing in Shawna’s budding friendship with—and later, romantic attraction to— Arye. That came out of nowhere, and I found myself unable to understand their relationship. Even with those small complaints, I found SAY THE WORD to be an overall good read, perfect for fans of Sarah Dessen and Elizabeth Scott.

I was very skeptical of this book at first - because it struck me as a crudely disguised attempt to describe the events of the seizure/hostage-taking of the Japanese Ambassador's residence in Peru in December 1996. As a person who once lived in Peru, I was not interested in being told a story I already knew. But as I continued to read, I became captivated by the characters themselves and became invested in their stories. On the whole, despite my concerns about the context, the story was worth reading.
