I was loving this book until about 60 or 70 pages from the end when it just seemed to run out of steam. The ending just didn't match the momentum of the rest of the book. But it is a page-turner until then and I learned a lot about American history incidentally.

The idea of this work, that your blood type determines what you should eat and how you should exercise, is compelling, so I borrowed it from a friend. Of course, I started by skimming my own blood type, and I found it to be much like reading a horoscope in a Sunday paper. Sure, there were some things that seemed to fit, but there were also some things that were the exact opposite of my experience. I laughed out loud when I read that certain Types are subject to heart disease and cancer! Oh really, those are only the top two killers in the US, thanks so much for letting me know! :) The lack of actual research/ study citations becomes glaring in light of so many 'scientific' assertions, althought anticdotal case studies abound, further facilitating the feeling that this book is more about the author (and his desire to break new ground and/or recruit followers) than the book's actual content. And yet I could not back away from the appeal of the idea. Wanting to take my investigation a step further, I called my mom, the resident medical expert of our family. We discussed our family history and how it fit within the rubric of D'Adamo's theories, and our conclusions were pretty much the same as mine previous. The categories of blood type, as presented, simply failed to provide insight into our family health history. Finally, I read a few goodreads reviews, and looked the idea up on the web by googling, "Blood Type Diet". It seems that others had the same problems with Dr. D'Adamo's theories as I did. There is simply no research to support his ideas, and in the end, the types he sketches out are so general that those willing to believe will quickly see themselves in his writing and disregard all that doesn't fit. Not recommended at all. Well, I guess if you are studying mass hysteria, development of cult followings, or something similar, D'Adamo's book might interest you.

This book was really upsetting. It completely robs the enslavement of blacks of any sort of sterility attached to it by the white supremacist account of history. I felt disgusted and hopeless and tortured by the experiences of the protagonist as well as her accounts of the actions taking place around her . . . but it was a good pain. The kind that makes you feel more capable of being a compassionate human being and the kind that makes you want to fight so fucking hard against that sort of unfathomable human cruelty and ignorance. It was a beautiful book about ugly things and people.

My first problem with this book is that it is poorly written. My mother sent it to me with that very caveat. She found it fulfilling; I did not. In fairness to the author (and those who liked this) I read it very sporadically through a tumultuous time (the last few weeks of my pregnancy). Perhaps there is more to it than I noticed. I found the author acting pretentiously knowledgeable about her very short time in India - as if she completely understood Mother Theresa and the sisters after working for one summer there. She looks down on many of the other interns and seems to find herself superior for being so faith-oppositional in the beginning.

This limited edition chapbook contains two excellent Gene Wolfe short stories, each inspired by artwork by Lisa Snellings-Clark. The first story is "On a Vacant Face a Bruise," a prequel of sorts to one of my favorite Gene Wolfe stories, "The Toy Theater." The story tells the tale of a boy who runs away and joins an interplanetary circus. It's a coming of age story that's told beautifully. What really got my heart pumping though was the the fascinating backstory into the characters from "The Toy Theater" and their relationship. The second story is "Sob in the Silence," about a horror writer who plans to abduct a young woman and enslave her. Plans go awry as they often do, and the writer learns the real meaning of horror. This story is one of the creepiest stories I've ever read. I found it reminiscent of Edgar Allan Poe at his best. Great stuff.

Wow!

In retrospect I loved the title and liked the twists and turns in the story but I also disliked all the people - as perhaps one was meant to do - and that means it wasn't such a good read for me. I read it on Kindle which means that there are no clues as to what to expect. I am interested in Stella Duffy - she's a writer i'd like to explore furhter.
